ajm200
Hi everyone. Not been on here for ages as we lost our chickens last year to a fox attack and haven't replaced them yet. Hoping to get the new girls soon though. If your area is affected by the hosepipe ban and you want to use your hosepipe to clean up after your chickens, you should contact your water board now to get an exemption. They will take your water account number and log the fact that you keep chickens. They will then issue an exemption letter that allows you to use the housepipe to clean up after your chickens for health and safety reasons. The call will only take minutes but could save a lot of hassle later. Hope this helps Amanda
Cinnamon
My water board do not issue exemptions - they wouldn't even put it onto my account records that we keep hens. They just said that should someone phone & report me,& should they say that we keep hens, they will advise them that I can use a hosepipe for their welfare. Seems daft to me - if they simply made a note on my account of the hens,& of the fact that we run a business from home,it would save a lot of bother should someone report us (as I fully expect they will in this village!) I am with Thames Water.
Chicken shack
Hi Amanda Thank you for the advise. Anglian water don't issue letters either however the very nice man has logged it on my account. I have only had to use my hose pipe for the past few weeks because my water butts were empty but with all the rain yeaterday they are now full again. MaxBaz
Thanks for this - was wondering today how on earth I was going to clean out the girls Eglu and Cube. Logged onto our water company and they will put a note on the account that I am exempt under livestock clause and able to use the pressure of the hose to clean out the cage. Many thanks for reporting this!
Margaret
I am with Thames Water as well, told them about the hens and they have noted my call and given me a reference number. The lady told me I can use my hose to clean the housing and the Hens, So will clean the Hens when they are free ranging on the lawn.Dont normally shower them.
