kittyl
I've read this advice lots of times here - the eggs can be tucked under their wings - so I always check this when I lift my hen. What I didnt expect was an egg to be on top her foot! It fell onto the others with a crash, fortunately not from too high up and luckily none of them broke! Phew! We're only hatching 3 eggs, so that could've been a disaster! I only hope the shock hasnt harmed them.
Isabel
Oops! Glad it's still in one piece! an egg explode the other day and lifted Mum to be off the nest to clean everything up. I checked very carefully before lifting to make sure no eggs were under her wings then chucked her in the air and out the door gently as I've read to do. A few minutes later I looked in the run where she was scratching for corn with an egg stuck to her breast feathers - oops!!
mimi5
Yes, I wish I read this before I started with my broody pekin as I broke an auracana egg I'd bought in when I lifted her and it was tucked between her feet feathering and breast!!!! The first I knew if it was the awful crack sound as I placed her on the ground!!
kittyl
Oh darn I just tried candling a couple of the eggs. The first one I picked out had a small dent in it, about the size of a pea, this must be from the accident, I must have missed it. What's the chances of a chick surviving this?? They're 10 days in now (bantams)
kittyl
I have just read about using wax to seal a cracked shell, has anyone done this? did it work?
surfer_chicken
I dropped one of my eggs last year while candling, only a short distance (about 5-10cm) but it causes a small crack over the air sac of the egg. This was around day 14. I immediately covered the crack with clear nail polish, and the chick developed perfectly but took a little longer to hatch. She actually turned out to be the one girl out of the three that hatched that I chose to keep, and I still apologise to her for it
kittyl
I'll try that then, when I next lift her off. It'll have to be pink nailpolish though, its all I have. I suppose it may be a bit late as the bump happened a few days ago but got to try! I'll have another try at candling tonight to see if the chick is moving - I'm not too good at it, can never see much, & I hate upsetting Spotty - but I spose its important this time. kittyl
Just an update, I fixed Spotty's egg with some sparkly pink nail polish! with 2 days to go I tried to candle them yesterday, all 3 have the same size of dark shadow including sparkle egg, & I'm pretty sure I saw some movement from that one too, so I think it'll be ok. I wont touch them again now
