Aren't chickens amazing?

Recommended Posts

Since getting my ex-bats 20 months ago, I have been in constant awe and amazement at their adaptability, tenacity, and sheer enjoyment of life. For well over a year they gave me daily eggs, after a year they moulted and re-feathered - all the bald patches filled in and they looked better than ever. The way they tolerated the dog and the cat (put the cat in her place by chasing her across the lawn), their love of dustbathing, especially on a sunny day, and all their little character traits, gave me endless fun and amusement. I have been fascinated by the strong bond they formed with each other. I just think they are fantastic creatures, and it fills me with horror to think of the lives they lived in the battery farm.

We lost our beautiful Cleo last night. I posted on here about 3 weeks ago that she seemed to be going downhill. She soldiered on for much longer than I thought, not eating much but still enjoying a few treats, and still enjoying a potter round the garden, scratching and pecking gently. Yesterday she stopped eating and settled down on the run floor to sleep most of the day. I put her in the hen house last night, Henny and Lucky snuggled in around her. This morning, as sadly expected, I found she had died in the night.

I don't feel heartbroken, just very sad, but very grateful that she had (I hope) 20 months of good life after coming out of the battery farm.

Bye bye Cleo x

They are pretty amazing, and they have added so much to my enjoyment of life.

They have had me outdoors all through the winter and I too love their different personalities.

And all the chickeny people on here I have met (virtually) through having them are all wonderful.

Sorry to hear about your Cleo, but she had some great times, and they are the ones to remember :)
