I really need some advice, please

Recommended Posts

So on my first hatch. Not been easy so far....mum was pooing on eggs in the nest, then the hatch was over 3 days and finally I lost the only aruacana chick that hatched from bought eggs.

The chicks and mum had all been doing fine until yesterday when I noticed blood in the chicks poo!!!!!!(although they didn't appear unwell) I had got some coxoid in and was going to dose their water that day anyway (as the youngest 2 where a week old yesterday) So I have done that and they seem ok. Still a little blood in the poo today. Unfortunately, today was transfer them into the outdoor ark with run!!!!But feel I should keep an eye on them and their poo!

So another worry is Milly pekin mum. She has been making the occasional wreching action whilst sitting on the eggs...didn't know what it could be but she seemed otherwise ok. But have noticed her doing it more and more and have even seen the chicks do it now. What could this be????????? Can I do anything???? She was due another round of flubenvent wormer whilst sitting but the advice I got was wait until she leaves the chicks.

Feeling so down today, this is just another bad experience since getting my pekins. I had no idea it would be so problematic? (wont go in to all that now!!) I think this is my 1st and last hatch. I was hoping to add a couple of girls to my small flock, as I lost my lavender earlier this year.

Sorry for the newspaper....just worried and feel helpless. :(:(:(

You will still see blood in the poo for a few days just make sure you give them the coxoid for a week i had a few cases of cocci last year and lost some chicks you will need to treat the area they lived in with stalosan f or something like that as the ground will be contaminated dont worry they should be fine as for the wreching not sure but you cant give them any other medication while they are on the coxoid leanne :)

Thanks Leanne,

There is less blood today than yesterday and they do seem "busy". It's just such a worry when you work and you can't watch them constantly, (day off today back to work tomorrow!) yet they can succumb to things so quickly. :(

I've got my other pekin Molly sitting on 6 unrelated pekin eggs too. She is on day14. First thing this morning I got on the phone and ordered some medicated chick crumb as I don't want to go through this again!!!!!!

My chicks were on medicated chick crumb last year it didnt seem to make any difference if it wasnt for the fact that i hatch turkeys who need to be on medicated i think i would go back to normal dont let that worry you im sure your next batch will be fine i say every year oh god ive had enough im not bothering next year after hatching over 30 cockbirds but i always do leanne :)

As I understand it you mustn't give both as they can overdose on the medication. The only advantage with the chick crumb is they get it from as soon as they start to eat. Where as the advice I read with adding coxoid to the water was wait until the youngest chick is a week old.

Is that right?

You're right SJP - medicated crumb is a preventative. However, it doesn't always work as there are many different strains of cocci. So if you see a chick with blood in poo you should get either get coxoid into them asap (best to have it in, just in case as it doesn't need a prescription) or use baycox (only from a vet) and switch to UNmedicated crumb (using coxoid and medicated crumb cancels out the effectiveness of both). Again its worth having a small bag to hand just in case, it doesn't cost much. Don't use coxoid 'just in case' if there are no signs, there is no point and in any case over-medication is not good.

However, sadly even when taking precautions, cocci can kill quite easily, and very quickly.

Leanne is also correct about cleaning out thoroughly with effective products such as VirkonS - its imperative. The occysts which cause cocci can live in the soil for 12 months. In fact, the husbandry routines with young chicks are very important, keep feeders/drinkers clean and try not to have damp bedding around. Also try not to go from adult pens to chick pens - their immune systems aren't fully developed to cope with anything which may be transferred. Ideally we should all disinfect boots between times but I know not many of us are able to manage that on a regular basis. :D
