shemybelle
Hello (me again!) I just found a very strange looking soft egg in the run. It was long (about 6"), and had no yoke. I burst it and it was definitely egg white inside. I know that softies are normal, but the shape sort of worries me. Two questions. Is this normal? I think I know the answer to that one, i.e. that it's just the hen getting into the swing of things. My Rhode Rock laid a softie on Sunday and has laid two normal eggs yesterday and today. Is it likely that she would lay another softie after two normal eggs? Or is it more likely that one of my other girls (who haven't laid yet) did it? I'm just hopeful that it was one of the others and that they may lay proper eggs soon! That was more than two questions, sorry! Thanks in advance. shemybelle
Well, the Rhode Rock sat in the nest box for about an hour this morning and I thought she'd laid and was sitting on the egg. I put some mealworms in the run to entice her out, which they did , but there was no egg there. So now I wish I'd left her to it. I guess I'll just have to learn to be more patient! shemybelle
I realise I'm talking to myself here, but I'm a foster carer and have looked after so many children that I'm well used to it! Anyway, Apollo the Snowdrop just laid a soft egg. It was perfectly formed apart from having no shell. I'm pretty sure it was her who laid the strange softie yesterday. Rocky Balboa, the Rhode Rock, laid a normal egg this afternoon.
LottyJ1
Hiya, I find my only ex-batt who still lays can lay a variety of shapes and colours! And the old girl tried to lay in the spring producing a couple of tiny eggs with no yolk and then gave up again - Not sure what your funny eggs means though - i just put mine down to being ex-batts! Ain't Nobody Here
I think funny shaped eggs are just par for the course and aren't generally anything to worry about. If you don't have chickens, you must think that all eggs are perfectly egg-shaped because that's what the supermarkets sell! There must be thousands of odd eggs that get sold for cake mixes etc and don't end up in egg boxes. Edited June 20, 2012 by Guest
LolaLayla
What age are your girls? And what are you feeding them? Just asking as this might give a clue to the soft eggs
shemybelle
Hello and thank you for the replies. I'm pretty sure Apollo (the Snowdrop) laid the strange egg and that it was just her getting into the swing of things. She's now laying lovely normal shaped eggs every day. So that's two out of three of my girls laying. I'm delighted! Lx
