Isabel
We planted up a small orchard two years ago. Year one we had a few apples. Last year (two) even less than the year before. And this year, as yet, there is no sign of anything remotely resembling an apple, pear or plum! The pear and plum trees have never produced a fruit. The trees were all selected keeping in mind pollinators and several are self-pollinating. None look diseased - all healthy with lots of leaves and growing well. I'm getting browned off with the lack of fruit! Any ideas please? Thanks Isabel
sjp
non will flower now this year as it's to late in the season. the apple should fruit next year but might not the year after young apple trees can be like that and depending on what it is if you get a heavy crop one year it might not fruit the next (bi-annual bearing is what it's called) pears normally take a year or 2 longer than apples to get going they are also more likly to lose fruit to frost as they flower earlier than apples.plums can take a long time to fruit I've got some that are at least 6 years old and only started to flower last year the one didn't flower at all this year but it's got badly wind burnt just as it started to brake bud the other flowered but I don't think it'll crop.but there's always next year I also have an apple that was raised from a seed thats got to be 6 years old that's never flowered that I fully expect to take at least another 4 years to flower and at least a year or 2 after that to crop
Guest
Probably a frost or just too cold at blossom time! If no pollinators around - the fruit doesn't set! Bee's are sensible - when it's cold - they stay at home! Better luck nest year!
Isabel
Thanks SJP and Louise - that's really useful ... I was beginning to wonder whether we hadn't given them enough attention but it sounds like they need to be left to their own devices. sjp
your welcome I forgot to add that I very much doubt that apple and pears will crop very good this year any way as last year was a very good and long season for them in most parts of the country certainly the one of mine that cropped last year haven't flowered well this year and the others flowered well but haven't set much fruit
mollyripkim
I had a huge crop of pears last year so not expecting much this year judging by the low amount of blossom, cherries not doing well either.
Charlottechicken
I have a very small, young pear tree which cropped well last season for it's size. This year there was plenty of blossom, but all of the developing pears fell off! Plums look poor this year as well. Oh well, last year was a bumper one. clucker1
Thank you eeryone! That explains why our apple and cherry trees don't look too goo this year. Last year, we did so well with apples! I think everyone did.....there were even some left in my dr's surgery with a help yourself note. Can you put horse muck on fruit trees..do they do better if you feed them? chickencam
Our fruit trees are poor this year too, some apples but very little stone fruit, a cold wet spring with frosts at the wrong time is the cause.
lillybettybabs
My pear and plum trees hardly have any fruit growing on them but my blackcurrant and gooseberry bushes have lots of fruit!
cheekymonkey68
I have a patio peach which has gone bonkers and has masses of fruit, as do my strawberries and blueberries. My poor apple trees which are only young, blossomed early and I lost the fruit due to frost and rain. I have two apples on my Bramley's seedling as it's a lot later to blossom and I have an apple orchard next door which was also in bloom. No Pears on my patio pear and I have only one fig on my tree which was fruiting well last year... wonder what will happen with my grape vine ....not a fruit year! I've had to replant most of my veg as it washed away!!
