One year on

Recommended Posts

It is a year today since our girls joined us for the first time.

After years of thinking about it my OH said after a few beers to many one Sunday evening "Do you know I reckon we could find a space for chickens down by the pear tree  " Within half an hour i had ordered a coup on line before he had a chance to change his mind.

So a coup arrived and a WIR built around it and 3 chickens ordered. The 3 girls arrived on 17th June ,Clover, Poppy and Florrie....It was a decision that was to change our lives. We are both over 60 both of us working with no kids at home anymore ,2 allotments where we grow all our veg and this was the next step.

What a joy they have been.We had no knowledge what so ever except what I had read and read on here .I remember writing that although I loved those girls to bits already I backed off every time they came anywhere near me Gently gently I learnt to trust them with help from on here.

We lost Florrie after 6 months with an infection .We replaced her with 2 more Little Rosie and Eva.The intros were similer to what I had read about and took about 3 weeks ,all was well in the end .Eva was never right she laid soft eggs all the time , always looked sad and generally poorly from the start. We lost her after only 2 months with sadly a broken leg but now we are left with the 3 again ..Little Rosie who we have had 6 months today , Poppy and Clover a year today...What a joy!!!!!

Last night my OH came and said " As we have had the girls a year why don't we take down the old greenhouse at the bottom of the garden , put up new fencing and make more space for the girls  "..more GNR ..I am hoping .

For anyone on here that has been thinking about it and dithering,....Go for it .Our lives have changed and our priorities have changed

How lovely!

It's only been a couple of months here, but we are besotted.

I've just been outside tidying around the garden, with my two girlies helpfully chucking all the mulch out of the borders all over the paths, bok-bok-bokking gently to me all the while and eagerly pouncing on the bugs I turned up. :D

When I sat down with my 'elevenses' I had two hens hopping onto my lap to nab bits of muffin and go all soppy when I stroked them.

Two beautiful brown eggs again this morning.

Thanks to everyone on here who has offered help and encouragement I now can't imagine life without the 'clucks'

[but can we have some better weather now, please?]
