Sex of Golda's foster chick??

Recommended Posts

Hi there!!

She looks like my girl chicks, they are 7wks and 9 wks now. She is very pretty, you must be pleased!! Especially as she's your only & a girl!!! Enjoy! :D:D

Is she a pekin cross??? :? She looks lemon cockoo, but the tail isn't right for a pekin.

Thanks both - that's very hopeful and confirms what I'm thinking! Yes, I think she's gorgeous, Mimi. Apparently she's a Chamois Owlbeard, which is a very rare breed and colour in the UK. I got the egg from Andy Cawthray, who specialises in rare breeds. He gave me 4 different eggs for Golda to brood and only this one hatched as you know. We were all very excited when we found out what she was, from Andy. It's been lovely watching her develop. She's a really feisty little character who holds her own very well when she's free-ranging with the 4 pekins. When Golda gets fed up with mothering (probably next week...?) I'm getting another little owlbeard of about the same age from Andy, to keep her company. :D

How are all your chicks, Mimi? When did the mother leave them? Do you keep them separately from the big girls?

I'll post some pics of the 2 owlbeards...!

Oh wow how lovely!!! Never heard of an owlbeard before!!! Is that a bantam breed? So nice that you will be able to get a friend for her!! :D

Well, both of my mummy hens are back with Mr Monty and on egg laying duty again, hooray!! Milly started laying again bang on the 6 week mark and then lost interest in the chicks. They were 3 beautiful cockerels and a hen, all from my own eggs. I managed to re- home the 3 boys and have kept Penny! Molly started laying around the 5 week mark and also started to lose interest, but I made her hang on a week until the boys went and I put all the remaining chicks in together. :D:D

I will try and post a pic of them all. From the 2nd lot of hatching eggs I got a birchen hen, florence, a blacK (possible mottled) hen, Martha and another boy who is a lemon cockoo I think, Marty Mcfly. Might be keeping him, but going to see how it goes!

So would you hatch again?? I'm not sure I would! I did enjoy it but it was stressful and I got mostly boys!!!! They were all beautiful and I would have loved to have kept them, but it's just not practical and I know I was lucky to have re-homed them!!!

But I guess by next year I might feel different!:roll:

Pics of your little ones please!!!! :D
