Parsley
I need to take out insurance for my half acre to cover my birds and houses etc but also cover if anything untoward should happen to the estate livestock, fencing etc. Has anyone got anything like this and can point me in the right direction? I totally overlooked this aspect but it is a condition of my rental agreement. This forum is invaluable
The Dogmother
No idea really but have you tried the NFU?
Redwing
I really struggled with this, not even being able to get liability insurance in case my animals strayed as my flock is so small The best I managed in the end was to add bits to my home insurance to cover certain goods away from home and i dont keep anything of value there, I split my birds between locations and coops so dont run the risk of losing them all If there was a footpath running through my field I would be more worried about liability, as it stands I just get so paranoid about the fencing that I dont even use most of the land If its a condition of your rental I would ask the landlord nicely where they suggest you could get the necessary insurance

Parsley
"Parsley - Hopefully teh landlord will be able to help, presumably the last occupant of the land had some sort of insurance?" Apart from several beautiful old farm houses that they rent out they have never rented out land before. I wrote to them as part of my campaign to find land and they liked the idea of helping someone out As my landlord said if he couldn't find somewhere on his 300 acres........ I have part of a very large field which I "share" with sheep and either Sussex or Dexter cattle depending on the rotation. The Dexter bull is very friendly...... They have been really helpful so I'm sure we can sort this out. I'll let you know if I find anywhere although a lot of the insurance companies are geographically based and stick to their own patch. Thanks for the help so far.
Lesley
We went and spoke to the local NFU agent even though NFU Head Office is almost on our doorstep (and I used to work there) They were really helpful and sorted out exactly what we needed and which bits we could leave out. It's not the cheapest insurance but they are really good if you need to make a claim. We had to have it becasue the mortgage depended on us having it and our manky outbuildings had to have a certain amount of cover even though they aren't worth it. Unfortunately one of the parts we decided to leave off was storm damage for outbuildings - we had a mini tornado recently which flipped the largest field shelter onto it's roof and all the walls fell off!
