LolaLayla
Having a puppy can be a worrying time Our garden is full of slugs at the moment and on visiting the vet I saw a lot of posters about lungworm. We are going back on Friday for the second lot of vaccinations and worming meds. I will need to ask about prevention of this then. Is this really prevalent
Bramble
I worry about this kind of stuff a lot - my garden is full of slugs etc so do worry about Willow picking up stuff she shouldn't! I use Milbemax to worm her (prescription only, from your vet I think) mainly becuase the other wormer we tried, Drontal, didn't seem to agree with her . The upside of Milbemax is that I think it has a preventative effect with heart and lung worms which you don't get with Drontal. I'm sure there are other members more qualified to advise than I am though (and I don't know if Milbemax is suitable for pupsters), the downside is, it's a fair bit more expensive than Drontal ... Chucky Mama
There is a lot of scaremongering regarding lungworm. It is still quite rare. Some vets go over the top in order to promote certain products following aggressive marketing from drug companies. Some areas do see dogs suffering from the condition and other areas have never seen a case. I believe the South East sees some cases. The worms are transmitted by eating slugs, snails and some types by direct contact with dog faeces. You should only consider regular preventative treatment if your dog eats slugs and snails, most dogs don't. Milbemax given every 3 months reduces the infection of both French Heartworm and Crenosoma vulpis. You can use Advocate spot on which treats fleas and would also deal with worms including lungworm. I personally don't feel it necessary to worm my dog monthly so would rather treat for lungworm every 3 months IF if felt my dog was at risk which I don't. Panacur will also treat lungworm and although only licensed for one type it has traditionally been used as an effective lungworm treatment. I am not worried about lungworm but I might give her a dose of Milbemax this month as we are travelling to Europe with her.
Bramble
Thank you CM, I knew you'd know - that's very reassuring for me (and sorry, Lolalayla to crash your thread!!!! )
The Dogmother
I totally agree with CM, my vets are on a mission about Lungworm at the moment; the rep has been in and they have posters from a certain company up all over the waiting room. I'm not inclined to worry about mine unless/until either of them shows any symptoms.
Lavenders_Blue
Like Bramble, I use Milbemax anyway as Drontal doesn't seem to agree with Tango, so Lungworm isn't anything I intend to get too panicked about. The best thing you can do is familiarise yourself with the symptoms so that you can get to the vet if needs be. I really don't like the idea of using a spot on treatment every month. LolaLayla
Thanks for the info. I will now feel more informed when I go on Friday Apart from posters in the vets there is also a huge one outside too I will need to find out if there have been any cases in our area. Bramble - don't worry about crashing the thread. I do that all the time I just hope folks don't mind.
LolaLayla
Just back from vet. It was all quite traumatic. I did not realise how much she would cry with the microchip The Shih Tzu before us made an awful racket too. Lara also yelped with the injection as it was given further away from her neck as she had had a bad reaction to the first one. The kennel cough (which apparently is bad round here at the moment) wasn't exactly wonderful either. Anyway it is all done and the vet has given us Advocate to put on her tonight. No choice about it, that seems to be what they use. I was pleased to get her home and out for a play in the garden. Unfortunately she managed to run under my feet and I trod on her Poor Lara, she is fine but what a day
The Dogmother
Bless, kiss her ears from me. I think we've been too long without a photo of the wee fluffy one.
