newcountrygirl
I feel sad today when I should be happy. We are going away for a long weekend so took Ziggy our Border terrier to the kennels yesterday evening. The girl at the kennels is lovely and loves dogs. I just feel so guilty. Ziggy only goes to kennels once a year and I cried last night cos i didnt want her to think I was abandoning her. I know she will be fine - and I am being silly but I miss my little friend. I know we will have a good weekend but already i cant wait to come home and go get her back.
The Dogmother
I know how you feel; mine used to go to a local kennels for the one week a year that we were away without them; they hated it and so did I. Lurchers are very people-centric and didn't enjoy all the other dogs either. This year they stayed with a local friend who has her own dogs and kennels; they had a wonderful time and I didn't worry about them one bit. See if you can find a dog-savvy friend who can have them to stay or live-in at your house.
welovemarmite
My dog is a breed that does not kennel well. We had also already booked our summer holiday before getting the dog and we are unable to take him with us. He is going to a dog sitter so will be in someone elses home. He has had a trial run for a couple of days and he loved it. I will miss him so much when we go away as he is my constant companian, a bit like going on holiday without your kids i guess, but i know he will be happy where he is staying. I used a local franchise of a dog sitter. You can usually get a list of them at your local vets. You may even find that some of the vet nurses do it too to make some extra money. You know then that they are really in safe hands. K
newcountrygirl
Thanks for the tips. Well we are now back from our long weekend away. Picked Ziggy up this morning. She has been fine. The girl at the kennels I know quite well and she loves dogs so I knew Ziggy was in safe hands - but still feel like she would think we had left her. She was waiting for us - her tail wagging furiously. No doubt there will be some serious cuddles happening tonight.
lillybettybabs
Pleased it went well, It is a worry. Our oldest lab had a horrid time in kennels as a pup so i refuse to put him in one now. we have mobile kennel/trailer so they all come with us wherever we go. They have been to so very posh hotels and some lovely cottages that normally refuse dogs, Going abroad is a problem though.
newcountrygirl
We were going to a motorbike rally. Although Ziggy does occasionally ride on the trike it wouldnt have been fair to take her as we were working as marshals most of the weekend and she would have had to be tied up to make sure she didnt get in the midst of the many motorbikes. She has settled back into her normal routine now. We went up the field and round the lakes and she was happy as a pig in the proverbial! The only funny thing was- i think she must have been doing a lot of barking whilst in the kennels cos the first time she barked today it came out as a high pitched squeak. freddie
I just cant do it, as Flynn is So spoilt, and such a softie, she'd be a wreck, as would I. I left her at home with son and hubby when we went off camping last week, and she was a lot ditsressed because I wasn't there! They didn't get much sleep!!! she does sleep with us, at the bottom by my feet(I never let the kids get away with any of this nonsense!! Groovychook
Glad Ziggy was okay I'm rubbish at going away and leaving my furry friends. It's just the worst thing about holidays- that's why I don't do them very often! I'm sure that I fret just as much as them... probably much more
Lavenders_Blue
I'm a daft softie and won't kennel Tango either, despite the fact that she was kennelled when she was in rescue and absolutely fine. Now she is far too spoilt and would miss her home comforts (that's what I have convinced myself anyway)
newcountrygirl
Ziggy was fine - it was me that was a babbling wreck. One thing though - i think she must have been doing a lot of barking because of the other dogs at the kennels - since she came home yesterday everytime she tries to bark it comes out like a high pitched squeak I think she must have barked herself ho"Ooops, word censored!". Since coming home she has commandeered the sofa and has had rather a lot of treats.
lillybettybabs
Its horrible leaving them, I get homesick very quickly. I wish i could win the lottery so i could buy a house by the sea and take ALL of our mob on hols (chickens too!)
newcountrygirl
We are only 2 and a half miles from the sea. The only reason we went away was because it was a motorbike rally which we go to every year and work as marshals. Before moving to Lincolnshire we used to go down to the South of France at least twice every year to stay with friends but that was before we had Ziggy and the chickens. Fortunately for us our friends moved back to England at the same time as we moved here so no pull to go. We are so lucky here - every morning i open my curtains to see countryside and hear the birds singing. I now have no wish to go on a holiday.
