17 week bantam questions updated an egg

Recommended Posts

Well the chicks that hatched around Easter are now 17 weeks. The boys and a couple of girls have gone back.

I am now left with 4 girls, two Welsummers, a barred Wyandotte and a gold laced Wyandotte and Tumble my little Mini Silkie who hatched on day 17 sending me into a panic as this was my first ever hatch. Tumble is a boy but we are hoping to keep him as long as he does not get too loud.

They have lived in the eglu since they were big enough to go outside, should I put the bars back in now?

I plan to keep them on growers until they start laying. Do you think they will lay this year or will I need to wait for the spring?

You can put the bars back in :D You might be lucky and get an egg this year but I wouldn't bet on it, especially given the poor light levels we've had. I'm afraid a bit more patience will be required, but if you're lucky they may come into lay quite early in the New Year. It would be lovely if you could keep Tumble, I can see there is a special bond there :D

Tonoight I put the bantams to bed and looked in on them in their eglu to say goodnight  and there in the nest box was a tiny egg. I couldn't believe it, I had hoped to get an egg next month but this took me completely by surprise.

None of them have particularly red combs but the Barred Wyandotte is quite red in the face but no comb, I wonder if it was her ?

I am so :D:D:D

My bigger chicks are coming up to 21 weeks so maybe I could be getting some soon too.
