yay!! I have my girls!

Recommended Posts

Well, after weeks of waiting and preparing we fetched our chickens today. I'm already besotted and my 2 daughters have been grinning from ear to ear all day. I have no idea what has happened in the olympics today as the coop and run have been our tv for the day! I can see no jobs getting done, at least for the next few days. We have 4 chickens: Doris, a warren brown, definately the most inquisitive, first to try the food, water, perches... Then we have Florence, a beachwood blue, a bit aloof, then there is Lily, a light sussex, rather scittish and already had a peck at me! she's huge too! None have shown themselves to be top of the pecking order yet, all happy and polite to each other. And then we have Henrietta, a gold laced wyandotte, definately bottom of the pecking order and has spent most of day under coop by herself but happy enough, preening, coming out for food and water bu t seems to love humans, she's like a cat rubbing against your leg and walking round you! I'm so excited and I know i probably sound like a daft newbie but this forum is about the only place i can get away with it!! And if I ever work out how you clever people put photos on I will share pics of my babies! Xxx If

Welcome to the wonderful world of chicken keeping..Only watching a few days :?: I have had my girls for 18months and every night I sit by my patio doors and watch them put them selves to bed ..They have changed my life for the better ,my priorities in life have changed and sure you will be the same.

Thanks jackian, will hunt down that post. Just been out and sat in run with them, in peace as kids are in bed so not jostling for space on our perch! Girls were acting odd, don' think they quite knew what to do so had to persuade them in. But before I did Florence the beachwood blue (a docile breed so I'm told!!) tried twice to fly out of the walk in run, grabbed hold of the wire, flapping furiously before scratching me as she launched herself back down to earth again! Still shaking!! Is this normal? Can she not see the wire, the roof and the closed door?? Hoping she will be calmer tomorrow! Xxx

Don't worry about the flighty behavior - my two newbies haven’t started laying yet and have mental spooky moments where it looks like they have seem something really scary but I can see anything and my old ex-batt Margo just looks at them like they are mental! :eh:

Makes me laugh.

They will settle don't worry.

Thanks everyone. Florence, the one who took flight at me, has let me pick her up today but has also had a good old peck at me too, madam!!! Bit concerned about Henrietta as she spends most of her time alone. She does come out to feed and drink usually unchallenged but doesn't get a look in with the corn and just looks lonely. Just need to toughen up i guess now I'm a new chicken mum and let them get on with it!!!! Xxx
