Hens' Day Out

Recommended Posts

I'm taking my hens out for the day tomorrow (I know, I shouldn't spoil them ... ) my friend is the Woodland Manager of a local green burial site, and she's holding a Working Woodland Day tomorrow. There'll be heavy horses, bats, bees, ferrets ... and chickens! When she asked me six months ago it seemed like a good idea, although since then I have wondered why I said I'd do it. I think a glass of wine may have passed my lips when I said yes.

The Eglu has been jetwashed and scrubbed and is loaded in the car, and the poor hens are having to make do with a cat-box combination (safely within the WIR, of course) tonight. I hadn't appreciated quite how much this would confuse them as they can't all fit in one cat-box, there was a fair bit of talking after lights out tonight, I feel a bit bad but it's only one night - I couldn't clean it and load it all in time in the morning.

Omlet have kindly sent me some catalogues, and I've got some laminated pics of my hens explaining what breed they are, and some Chicken Facts and Egg Facts. Unfortunately my Eglu is quite scratched due to hens who roost on top of it, and the cleaning necessary to remove the results of that, but I will explain to any interested parties that they don't usually look like this. All I have to do tomorrow is catch the ones I'm taking with me ... I may need to get up early and hope they're still sleepy!

I took 2 of mine to the Mr Blooms Nursery event in West Brom last month and they went down a storm.they took a few hours to come out of their shells once I'd got them out of the carry box

stock up on throat sweets you'll need them and don't forget to take a few eggs and examples of their feed for display

Wish I'd remembered the throat sweets! There were 700 visitors to the park today, and I can't believe how much interest there was in chickens - including quite a few people who already have them but haven't seen an Eglu. I gave away lots and lots of Omlet catalogues, and told lots of people what marvellous pets they make and how easy they are to look after. I wish I'd had a box for BHWT donations or something like that.

I had three eggs laid while we were there (I only took four hens) and got back to find two laid at home, which is a record at the moment. I need to get my hens more used to being handled as it was hard work catching them at 7.30, much screaming and flapping and the hens weren't too happy either! They were as good as gold when we got there though, ate lettuce and corn out of visitors' hands and loved scratching around on the woodland floor. I am exhausted, but I'd definitely do it again.

I took eggs, to show how different each egg is depending on the hen who laid it, and I had some pellets there for the girls anyway. A lot of people asked 'where do you buy hens locally', which I could answer but next year I'll type up the addresses of some local breeders to give out. I didn't take any eggs to sell, but I could have sold loads I'm sure.

Took me a while to recover last night, but I will definitely do it again next year - apart from anything else, it has reminded me what fun chickens are - they can sometimes seem like another chore amongst the many garden/household jobs to do, but I really enjoyed introducing them to people!
