Impacted crop

Recommended Posts

So a few days ago I noticed one of the Brown Rangers acting funny. She was very sleepy and not keeping her balance.

Long story short, she stayed in the nest box all evening and night. Came out about 20 hours of her own accord. But then stood around looking not very good. Occasionally slowly moving

We phoned the breeder last night and they said give her some olive oil/rice. She did put up a fight at first but then realised she quite liked it. Glad she put up a fight as i would be more worried if she just laid there. When we put her back in the run she did a really watery poo and seemed a little better. When she didn't go up the ladder to roost when all the others had, I picked her up and put her there myself.

This morning she came down of he own accord and her crop looks smaller. Her head is drooping almost to the ground and she is very sleepy and tired. She's done another little watery poo but her wings and tail are drooping. Plus she's standing by the food/drink but now taking any. She looks very pale around her eyes.

When it first started I thought it was egg binding, but she is 17 weeks and I do think it could be worms too. Perhaps live or mites too. Could still be but one thing at a time and it was impacted crop as it was hard and rather bulbous yesterday. Haven't felt her today.

She had poo stuck to her bum feathers yesterday but my Poland bantam was nice enough to pull it off yesterday.

She is one of three BR's we have that were hatched together. So we don't really want to lose one (though losing one anyway would be bad, of course).

Have read that white maggots help and luckily we have a bait shop down the road.

Taking her to the breeder today so they can have a look.

Oh and also she got impacted crop because we were giving them corn on the cob and apparently the sweet on is fine but not on the cob. She was being a greedy chicken eating lots of it.

Dont know where this idea comes from I feed it on a daily basis on the cob and BHWT recommend it as the best thing for a recovering chook.

There can be a variety of reasons for a crop being in stasis (not emptying) and the age and time of year from my very recent researching would be typical for over eating and eating the wrong thing.

There is an excellent thread I will link in that you might h

find helpful.

However the best advice I have found and it proved diagnostic, is to separate the chook and starve for 24-48 hours.

Access to plenty of water ACV Oregano extract citricidal (not all 3 ) in the water May help, as too would Avipro.

I personally put a separate bowl with Critical care solution in at its weakest dilution, as she was continuing to lay.

If the crop is not emptying during this time it will certainly be sour and need emptying.

I would also suggest that a Vet flushing it out would remove a physical blockage...

If this does not resolve it then you are looking at another reason for the block not moving.

A blocked gizzard perhaps (although my research suggests that the starving would assist this also..

Hope this is helpful , (we are still battling with the after effects of a blocked crop on a youngster) :(

Thank you Sandy. She is at the breeder's for a few days now as we are novices and she was quite sick. They got her to drink a little and eat a tiny bit of mushy food. They gave us wormers and mite kill for our other (6) chickens. Have just administered into their food -do I change the food every day for three consecutive days once a month? The instructions do not make it clear if you have to change the food or just add more in each day. It's Verm-X. Thanks

Hi, to be honest you should worm them with Flubenvet rather than Verm X. You can get Marriages layers pellets with Flubenvet, or you can buy it on prescription as a powder and mix it in with their food. Feed nothing else for 7 days.

Hope your poorly girl recovers.

Thank you, I've heard of Flub. The breeder uses Verm-x. However may get Flub just in case or use both if that's ok?

Does anyone know when they should update me?

EDIT: just had an update. She's still alive so far, had some wormer but her sinus' have blown up and she is still quite sick. They say they'll update again soon.
