Alis girls
Can chickens sense a predator before seeing it? Two of my girls were making a right racket this morning - the cats were in the garden with them but couldnt see anything else like another cat or fox. Can chickens sense danger before it appears? gongladosh
possibly, they do seem to know... Their eyesight in the day (though poor at night) is massively better than ours, but I understand their hearing is roughly similar.
zakjon-98
A couple of mine make a noise in the morning for no apparent reason sometimes They also make a noise when there is a fox about but this is much louder as all of them make the noise, not just the the one or two that are a bit noisy. Monty14
Chickens have sensitive feet and legs and can feel vibrations in the ground - i.e. when a predator is nearby. This is usually what wakes/alerts them and starts the hen's 'chattering'.
Sue
Chickens also have an excellent sense of smell
