Ain't Nobody Here Posted September 4, 2012 Share Posted September 4, 2012 Following on from the "parenting by text" thread, I thought I'd post about these two smartphone apps which sound pretty useful. One is "Viber", the other "Whatsapp". The first offers free calls/texts to other Viber users, the second free texts to Whatsapp users. I've downloaded them both - Whatapps seems to be working well although I only have a handful of people in my contacts who have it so far. Viber isn't working properly yet but I'm going to get my ES to help me as he has it. I've almost used up my text limit this month (first month ever on a contract so I had no idea how many texts I send!) so I think this could be pretty useful for keeping the number down in future so I don't go over. I noticed the mention of Whatsapp on the other thread and have downloaded that, but am waiting for my main text contacts to do the same so we can test drive it!! Chucky Mama Posted September 5, 2012 Share Posted September 5, 2012 I have "Whatsapp" on my phone and use it a bit but can't get friends to download it I was going to use it when I was in France to text the UK but wasn't sure if I needed internet connection which would have defeated the object so didn't use it in the end. Free texts & the facility to fancy up your photos with word bubbles, text boxes & pictures. Can obviously used for lots of very sensible normal texts, but unfortunately I seem to have got into the habit of indulging in lots of silly text conversations featuring lots of joke photos & silly captions. Great fun & worth a try. I assume it's available over there, if it's got as far as tiny, ever so slightly backward NZ it's surely readily available in the UK. I was useful though when I went to America to text my friend, although you do, as Chucky Mama said you need wifi. The texts are instant messages (like windows live messenger on your pc) and the calls are VoIP (like Skype) and they both require an internet connection (3G, wifi etc). So if you are using your phone's 3G connection and you don't get free Internet, you might end up paying quite a bit. That said, you can also download Skype for your smartphone.
