TiVo - any good?

Recommended Posts

Nearly a year and a half ago, I posted asking the same question but didn't get much response (perhaps no-one had one  ).

For various reasons, I phoned VirginMedia today to say we weren't overly happy with our V+ box and ended up being offered a 1Tb TiVo box, HD sports channels and an upgrade to 100Mb broadband for £6.50pm less than we currently pay (along with installation at £15 rather than £45).

Does anyone have a TiVo now and how do you find it? I'm slightly concerned at the negative reviews online (but of course, those who are happy probably don't bother posting reviews).

We have it and love it although I don't suppose we use all the features such as searching for actors etc. The channel finder as in scrolling through the channels is a bit more time consuming as you only scroll down one channel at a time rather than page - unless we just haven't worked it out right! All in all would give it a thumbs up, we don't watch a lot of tv but it's easy to record the series we do like.

Look at the Virgin Media Forum and the Cable Forum. Look at the cut and paste

replies to people with problems.

Was this offer subject to tying you into an extended contract?

Do you already have the Superhub, be carefull with their 100Mb claim.

Since they doubled my speed, their sevice matches Usain Bolt.

Lighting fast in short bursts, but only does it a few times a year.

Wow  . All I'm really gaining from reading Cable Forum is how snide and picky people are :lol: . So unlike this forum :P . The general consensus seems to be that you can't please all the people all the time so I think I'm just going to go for it and see how it goes. If the worst happens, I've still got my V+ box.

They told me the contract is for 12 months (is that "extended"?) and yes, we do have a Superhub which works extremely well. I can't remember the last time we had to reset it (unlike the previous modem).

I'm planning on asking the engineer if we can keep our ancient Telewest box (as I suspect it'll just be binned) just as a backup in case we want to revert to our old setup (if that's possible) :shh: .

We've had a TIVO box for well over a year now and it's brilliant. Can't really fault it at all and as someone who does use the Cable Forums I've seen all the people complain about the picture quality and things like that, but quite honestly I think it's great. We also kept our V+ box and got the Superhub but I've not dared try to set the Superhub up yet as we have an Apple router and it seems a bit fiddly to sort out, so we still have 20Mb internet :?

Hi Vicki! We were upgraded for free by Virgin about 6 months ago. Prior to this we had a V+ box which was actually quite tempremental and a dodgy router of our own that would shut itself down. So far we love both the Superhub and the Tivo box and we are probably no where near making use of all it can do. We kept the V+ box for no additional cost. Big improvements for us.

We have it and its definitely really clever but I think the interface is quite clunky and hard to use, compared to Sky Planner anyway! Not a reason to put you off, just my POV

Press the "Channel -" button, opposite the volume button :)
