Lice? Mites? Which treatment? completely befuddled!

Recommended Posts

Day 3 of newbie chicken keeping and hubby and I finally managed to catch our 3 poorly looking ex-batts girls to have a good look at them... one of them I spotted a small brown dot of a creepy crawly round the vent area :(

Is this lice? or mites? I've read so much about both of them on this forum I;m completely confused!

We've sprinkled the girls with red mite powder and put some in the eglu and dust bath and also have some diatom. But I don;t think any of the billion potions I've bought tackles lice if that's what we've got....?

Do I need some kind of spot-on thing?

No sign of anything in the eglu so I'm guessing it's lice not mites but completely new to this so I could well be wrong! 2 of the 3 girls looking hunched and sorry for themselves and all 3 feel very scrawny, none laying though they came out the farm 6 weeks ago...

Any tips of treatment/future prevention gratefully received!

thanks!

I had a problem with lice last year, I used poultry shield on the house {bought online as a concentrate and diluted with water] and diatom on the birds. I'm using the same for red mite this year and fingers crossed seem to be on top off it. hope this helps

I used frontline on my girls when I spotted a crawlie. It's not licensed for use on poultry but my vet prescribed it and does for others (he's a chicken vet). It's the cat and dog stuff I have and cleared everything up. Suggested egg withdrawal for 2 (?) weeks but as they are too young to lay wasn't a problem.

If the things are brown, flattish and 1mm or so long they will be lice. Lice dont live in the house, just on the bird, they are easy to shift, a Diatom type powder will do the trick, treat now then in 4 days then 4 days after that to make sure you get lice at every stage of life

If the brown things are pinprick size they could be Northern Fowl Mite, this is very hard to shift and may need some sort of spot on treatment or constant assault with powders

Johnsons mite and lice spray is extremely good for both so is well worth buying, One blast under each wing and by the vent is fine

Which product is this exactly? I've seen it recommended a few times, but can only find a spray for the house (not the bird); another for pigeons that no-one seems to stock any more and another which seems to be aimed at budgies etc
