I'm out of ideas... - sad update

Recommended Posts

Thank you x

The PM results show that Wildberry had various legions all over her liver and they also found a large white legion lump within her intestine. These are going to be sent off for testing. The vet mentioned possible hepatitis but said it could purely be down to the coccidia. She then recommended I clear out the whole of their ground as I can't move their coops/runs - so I will arrange to burn the wood chip and change it all to new.

The vet said she wasn't surprised she passed away and was waiting for the call :(

Outside of my close family people seem to be struggling to understand our grief - I mean it's JUST a chicken right? Why are people so ignorant? :wall: Everyone's support on here is hugely appreciated!!

So sorry to hear about Wildberry, you did all you could for her. I know how hard it is to lose a girl you have nursed, I lost one of my hens Coco to respiratory infection a couple of years ago, the vet and I had both tried so hard for her. Even the vet was sad. :(:( Sending you hugs.

You couldn't have done any more poor Wldberry at least she is at peace now. We lost our barred rock that we got in June too so can sympathise they are such a lovely pattern. At Christmas my girls decorate our mini apple tree with baubles one for each of our family and pets whom have passed so we can remember them.

My other girls each got steroid injections last night and they all seem to be doing OK at the moment. Virkon and Stalosan was in full use yesterday so I am hoping to keep on top of the Cocci to protect the other girls. They aren't eating as much as usual but I will keep an eye out to make sure as much as possible that this 'non-eating' doesn't get out of hand.

I will update when I find out the PM results x

Mrs B any pet is a member of the family and its right to grieve. Hugs xxx

Thank you for your post. You're absolutely right, pets are a member of the family - I know someone who adores her hamster to pieces and would do anything for him if he was poorly and no one understands which is a shame. My OH was upset at work and his boss was not sympathetic in the slightest :? x

So sorry to hear about your girl. My vet was also very sad about Wildberry, she told me she was the one that did the PM (it's quite a big surgery with different locations throughout Gloucestershire so I thought someone else would have done it) and I felt strangely comforted that she was there instead of a stranger! Thank you for your post x

Thank you, UKMARCH. Sorry to hear you lost your Barred Rock after not having her long too. It's so frustrating when certain things are out of your power isn't it? Your Christmas idea sounds wonderful. My mother suggested this to me too - we have an island in the middle of our garden with a Xmas-like tree in the middle and I think this is going to end up as 'pet island' and we can hang thing on the branches in memory of our beloved pets :) Thanks again x

I had a call from the vet this evening and they found that Wildberry died of Blackhead. So it wasn't the cocci after all.

The vet recommended worming the chickens every month from now on to stop the cycle of the Blackhead parasite. I am confused because they found cecal worms (I think they were cecal, I didn't write it down, so I am trying to remember!) in Wildberry's gut, even though I had wormed them twice (one at the gapeworm dose) in 2 months. :(

Hoping the other girls recover - they seem better coccidia wise as their poops are almost back to normal, but I am apprehensive due to the fact I can't stop them eating earthworms or catching Blackhead of each other. They still aren't really laying, I am hoping it's the weather (but they are hybrids so I wonder if they shouldn't be laying!)

I am going to do as much research as possible...thank you everyone for reading and for your support!!

Hope your girls are continuing to improve! How unlucky for you to have blackhead, I thought it was reasonably unusual in chickens - perhaps I'm wrong, something else to worry about! Hope your research is fruitful and you get eggs soon! Hx

Thanks, good egg! :) The other girls certainly seem to be getting better! *touch wood*

I think it's rare and doesn't usually affect chickens as badly as turkeys but it's just one of those things I couldn't control! I think a lesson we've experienced as new chicken keepers is that they are certainly a HUGE worry!!
