Janepie33
Our old (very old!) Landrover finally gave up the ghost and we have to buy a new family car. I spotted something suitable on our work intranet and have made an appointment for OH and I to go and see it on Saturday. Having never bought a car privately, I am totally unsure of the protocol. Would you pay a personal cheque? Transfer money straight into the seller's account? Anyone had experience of this? Any hints and tips greatly appreciated. soapdragon
Its really worth getting a vehicle check on it to make sure that its not previously been written off and resurrected or stolen! The AA offer this for a fee but not sure how much- maybe a discount if you are a member? Also ask to see the V5 document which should show any previous owners. A freind of ours bought a Discovery secondhand from a private buyer and had the police on their doorstep a few weeks later as, apparently, the car had been stolen and the sellers didn't, therefore, own it! They lost their car and their money. I really DON'T wish to alarm you but, having this happen to people that I know, I would always now get a vehicle check or buy through a local garage who offer some sort of guarentee and have a good reputation to maintain. That said; good luck!
Janepie33
Thank you. We have done an on-line car checker (from a site recommended by the police) and the car does not appear to be stolen, or s"Ooops, word censored!"ped or subject to a finance agreement or any other nasties. The only worrying thing is that in March 2010 it had done 24,000 miles and in March 2012 it appeared to have done 460,000 miles! The seller said that it had done around 50,000 (from the checker, it appears they bought it in April 2012. ) Seems an awful lot of miles to do in less than 6 months! Norway and back daily? A round the world trip? Have e mailed the checker company to see if it was a mistake!
Purplemaniacs
460,000 seems an awful lot, a typo an extra 0 added perhaps. We have sold a few cars to private buyers and they have all paid cash. Good luck. Chrissie
