bracken
I have decided that i am gonna get some bumpa bits to stop them ripping the new girls to shreds. But confusion kicks in as to what size to use and wheres best to get them from?
Sarah 2
I'm getting some from I think it's called Wernlas Collection. They didn't mention size. Look at '' Feather Plucking'' Thread. They cost 10p and you pay in 1st class stamps.

theherd123
When i went to the Wernlas Collection the lady was really helpful, she told me the bumper bits come in different sizes - she gave me average ones for my ex-battery babies but i think you can get then a little smaller and larger too
arowland17
Probably a stupid question but what are bumper bits? and would they work when introducing 1 new hen to 2 existing ones? Not yet got any but the only breeder near me is very low on stock and will be getting lots more in Sept but I don't think we can wait that long to get all 3 so were considering getting a couple now and adding a 3rd later
BeckyBoo
Arrowland17, have a look at the feather plucking thread, I didn't know what they were either, but apparently you fit them to the birds beak and it stops them pulling out feathers whilst still allowing them to eat and preen. They can stay on for ever and are really cheap. Gallina seems to be the absolute font of all knowledge on this, we're lucky as Rainbow seems to have stopped pulling out the others feathers for the time being but if she starts again she'll be having one! Gallina
I wouldn't say that I was the font of all knowledge on bumper bits! Others on the forum have fitted more of them than I have. I have, however, been singing their praises in the hope that other people wouldn't put up with merciless feather-plucking because they thought bumper bits were horrendous. I had four of them hidden in a drawer, while my gentle Cochin suffered a bare and sore bottom for months. Strangely, although I bought them at the same time as my first pair of new chickens, I didn't need them then: the fighting was over quickly. One of my chickens just decided to take up feather-plucking as a hobby: there was no nastiness involved.
Linda B
I put Bumper Bits on my 4 girls a couple of weeks ago after one was bullied by the other 3 and ended up with a big hole under each wing. They aren't too keen on them at first but soon get used to it. I got mine from Sue Hammon at the Wernlas Collection (01584 856318). You just send a sae and a few stamps to cover the cost of the bits (10p each) and Sue sends them straight away, I got mine within 3 days of posting the request. I must say that I don't particularly like them but they do do the job and now all my girls live together in harmony.
arowland17
That's brilliant thanks - I'll have a look at the thread suggested later on - hope I'm not asking another stupid question that's already answered on the thread, but can they be taken off after a while or will the bullying start again if taken off? Christian
I put one on Babs as she was bullying Laverne. It fell off after about 3-4 months and haven't had a problem since! I would just leave it on her, eventually it will fall off and hopefully the problem will be solved. I do keep a spare one, just in case!
