Snowy - as a nurse too I am shocked - I am 50 and was saying to OH I cant ever imagine as a student nurse or young staff nurse being taken seriously. Senior sisters and matrons words were law. I know of a few whistle blowers in the NHS who regretted bringing alergations about wrong doing to notice. However in recent times assuming he was still abusing I would have thought someone would have spoken up esp in this day and age. OH worked at Beeb albeit in other dept and never heard any rumours.

Yes, it's easy now to say we wouldn't stand for this ourselves, but until we are in the shoes of those who did turn a blind eye, we cannot judge them, and we don't know how many did try to speak up do we. I remember well the culture of the NHS when I joined in 1986 - thank goodness some things have changed for the better!

I can't believe the person on radio 4 who said that those offended against should "just get over it" I was, once again, only listening with half an ear and I know it was not the interviewer who said this but the person being interviewed but I was stunned. After all some (most?) of the people were children and some of them were disabled

I appeared on Jim'll Fix It when I was about 15. Apart from having a bottle of something alcoholic behind the sofa, Jimmy Savile was nothing but pleasant to us.

With more and more girls coming out of the woodwork daily, I am surprised and saddened not one went to the police years ago. If what he is being accused of is true, hundreds if not thousands of children could've been prevented from being put at risk. The amount of suffering caused was unnecessary. Maybe I'm being too harsh, but those girls could've done a lot more sooner to save others.

If you read the stories in many cases they did tell someone in authority and were either punished, not believed or the person they told felt powerless to do anything. Telling anyone would have been very difficult and when they were met with that reaction I'm not surprised they went no further or didn't tell anyone to start with.
