Luvachicken
I've had Queenie since May as a 6 week old chick. In the last week or so she has just started crouching. Today I found the sweetest little egg. It was odd because I could hear strange noises outside this afternoon. It did sound a bit like a chicken in a way, but then we have a lot of squawky jays around at the moment, so I wasn't sure. Each time I closed the back door after checking to see what was going on, the noise would start again. Then it went quiet and then it sounded like maybe there was something trapped in my garden or one of the chicks stuck, so I checked again but they were all fine. It was only when I went to give them their bedtime cuddle I spotted the egg The question is what should I be feeding her ? Up until today she has been eating Garvo chick pellets mixed with growers pellets. The problem I have is that she is in with 2 smaller chicks whose age I'm not that certain of. Can they all be on layers pellets ? How do I give her the layers pellets without the younger ones eating them ? Thanks for any advice xx
zakjon-98
Although I haven't kept younger birds I would personally feed them all on growers. Some people feed growers as adults and if they are pure breeds which take longer to mature, growers for longer is good for them. Congrats on the egg
Luvachicken
Congrats on the egg Yay, it was the sweetest little egg I've seen in ages. In fact the ONLY egg I've seen in ages
Redwing
I would keep them all on growers pellets for now As you know I am a great believer in these, none of my chickens are eating layers pellets at present and wont now until next spring
Purplemaniacs
I was going to say growers too. My bantams that hatched at Easter are still on growers, one of those has started to lay. I am wondering whether to give growers to my hybrids over the winter, does anyone think this would be a good idea? Congratulations on your egg Chrissie
Luvachicken
Thanks everyone. I will give them growers pellets from now on. It also solves the problem of what to feed them all when I try and introduce them all in half term at the end of the month. Thanks again. Congratulations on your egg Chrissie For hybrids I would be tempted to leave the bulk of their ration as layers pellets unless they are now taking a break over winter, they will simply be laying too hard to cope on growers For any pure breed I do swear by feeding growers pellets a lot of the time
superkitty
Sorry to butt in on this thread, but should I keep mine (orpingtons) on growers all the time then? Ive been giving them layers - will it have harmed them? Just about to order some more food today.. And (if I should have them on layers at any point, should that be in the summer maybe?) or just always growers?
