zakjon-98
Looks like a mixed breed to me. He is a nice looking cockerel though - looks like the kellogg's one!
duchess
Thanks Zac. Thought he was maybe RIR. But prob mixed
zakjon-98
He does quite a bit like a RIR. The ones I've seen are usually a lot darker but I guess it could be that he is not show quality or his strain.

The Dogmother
Lovely bird, looks like an RIR cock to me, or a cross of RIR
Redwing
He looks like a cross breed involving the common brown hybrid and possibly a bit of RIR blood He isnt dark enough to be RIR and isnt golden enough to be a NHR Lovely looking chap though and very healthy by the looks of it
duchess
Thanks everyone. He is indeed a lovely chap. Would it be worth breeding from him with my brown hens?
zakjon-98
If you wanted some laying hens and don't want to pay loads for them then it would be a good idea as he would probably carry good laying genes from the RIR or hybrid in him. The layers might not be quite as good as the commercial as those are specially bred for the most eggs but would imagine that they would still come close. One thing to bear in mind though is that hybrid cockerels are hard to rehome and you may need to cull them.
Redwing
It is possibly worth breeding from him yes. A cross involving a dose of pure bred genes normally results in a healthier bird good at laying but not to the detriment of their health like the commercial hybrids Drawbacks are that you wont get sex linked chicks so unlike with hybrids you wont be able to sex chicks on hatch and also (as already pointed out) the cockerels will be pretty much worthless so bear that in mind Only hatch if you can cope with the cockerel situation
