fantasticjudyann
My Bluebelle has just finished her first moult and is back in fine feather and looking lovely ...............except for a bald red botty. I don't think she is being pecked because the two of them have beak rings on and it does not look sore and is not bleeding. She is laying ok too. Is it normal to look like this after a moult? Should she be checked by the vet ?
Eggasperated
In my experience red bald bums are usually as a result of feather plucking. I found my girls were still able to pull feathers with bumper bits fitted so it is possible yours are still managing it too. I expect others on the forum will be able to offer some more constructive advice .
sandyhas3chucks
i use nappy cream metatanium i think it is, calms the redness for ages. might be from snuggling not roosting?
Rosey Supposey
I've had one with a bald red bum for months. She moulted and grew new feathers in February, but her bum stayed red and bald until about a week ago (I think she's decided it's now too cold and she needs some feathers down there!) She definitely wasn't plucked by the others (she's second from top hen and can be quite vicious with the other chooks), just never bothered to grow feathers down there. I always worried she might be sore, but there was never any show of it. Whole bum area got redder sometimes, pinker others (assume it's a body heat thing), but there was no indication it was troubling her in any way. Hope Bluebelle is doing well x
fantasticjudyann
Thanks Rosey Supposey. I think what you describe is happening here. Bluebell doesn't seem distressed and her bot is not raw and sore or bleeding just pink/ red. I will keep on observing. Perhaps she will decide to grow more feathers down there now the weather has got so cold
The Dogmother
Their skin is very thin and delicate so it does go red when exposed to the elements; I'd smother it in Sudocrem and add some Biotin (NAF make it as a horse supplement) to their diet, or Life-Guard to the water. Either will help with feathering up.
