Snugglesafe and hens

Recommended Posts

I wrap mine in a little towel (you know the really cheap, weeny handtowel type from that popular Swedish store) that way it's easy to shake off any poop and pop in the washing machine. They've never pecked it or got tangled in the cover overnight.

It's only the Bantie Kingdom that gets one, the 13 big girls in their (cube pink) are happy enough especially with fluffy Dolly and Kitty to tuck their faces into.

I've been keeping hens for six years now, and I do not provide any sort of heating, in fact I rarely bother to close the Eglu door as they are in a very secure WIR.

They were bouncing around and pleased to see me this morning, the cold really doesn't seem to bother them.

Same here, the only time I use a snugglesafe is under the water when the temperature is below -2deg and there's a risk of it freezing. I take the fleece cover off and just pop it under the drinker to peke it ice-free. The snugglesafe itself is made from rigid plastic so it's easy enough to wipe down with a Milton solution when needed.

I keep the fleece cover that came with the snugglesafe on, and sprinkle bedding on top! The cover gets a wash after a couple of uses (I am lucky with 'nice' poos at the mo!) and I spray disinfectant on the actual plastic when I take it into the kitchen. The girls snuggle against them, so seem to enjoy the extra comfort! In fact my Sussex, Lady, always sits on top of it and doesn't like to share with the Amber hen.

I probably wouldn't have used them if I have more than two chickens together because I was worried about them being uncomfortable in the minus temps, but even then they are very warm when I have picked one up late in the evening :)

it probably depends really - they'll probably be ok anyway, but for example when I got my hot water bottle it was because I was trying to introduce a single bantam chicken of fate that I'd found and she was in a separate run with "Ooops, word censored!"ody else to snuggle up to. They'll be toasty if there's a couple of them!
