should i get a cockerel - pics at last!

Recommended Posts

Ooo he's scrumptious.

I hatched a lemon cuckoo pekin year before last he was lovely I was so torn about whether to get rid of him or not and was a bit miffed when he actually sold at auction.

Have decided that my Nook is in fact a chap so have rechristened him Wurzel, far more suited to his appearance (quite a scruff bag). Going to try keeping him so fingers crossed on the noise level, may need another couple of Silkie girls to go with him (uh oh morehens strikes again  ).

He is gorgeous, and glad to hear he is sorting out the females sparring!

I wish my boy Bolt was as brave! I keep trying to let the pekin flock free range with the big girls flock, but Bolt herds them all into the corner of the run and up into the branches where they are 'safe' . If one of the big girls wanders into their run, he hides behind the pekin girls. I wouldn't mind but, even though he is a bantam dotte, he is much bigger than the pekins and is easily the same size as the hybrids. He is such a wuss

Luckily the neighbours have said his vocal skills do not bother them 8)

Thanks for all the lovely replies - helped make me feel that I'd done the right thing! :D

Mr D has been with the girls a few days now and I have to say that the female relationships are much more civilised and calm! Wish I'd considered getting a boy earlier now. Glad humans have evolved a bit from chickens!

Have a couple of funny pics of Golda gazing at him adoringly and Sian lowering her eyes coyly! All five go everywhere together and the girls all appear to keep an eye on him in case he decides to move off.

Like your Mr Monty, Mimi, if he finds a nice morsel he calls them all over and they're there like a shot!

Nice to watch! :)

So funny to picture Bolt hiding behind the girls, Snowy!

Re the crowing, he does start early but it's not continuous and he stops as soon as they're all let out. He doesn't seem to crow at all for the rest of the day. No complaints so far....!

Aaaaaahhhhhhhhh....two of my favourite boys

I agree a cockerel adds a level of decorum to the flock....my Baby splits up any s"Ooops, word censored!"s between my big and little girls with no trouble at all  .....I move on any hatched boys, but Baby stays...and my neighbour (who is renowned for his complaining abilities!) knows this fact! :anxious:

Mr D is indeed a beautiful fella
