Goosey Lucy
Today is the start of my first ever hatching experience. I have put a dozen Lakenvelder eggs and a dozen Vorwek eggs into an incubator at school as part of our Science topic. The children are extremely excited. So am I. I am also rather The lady who has loaned me the incubator has also supplied all the eggs, any birds that I don't want to keep will be going back to her so that's all boy issues taken care of. The next three weeks will either fly by or go by extremely slowly. Eek! Edited March 12, 2013 by Guest

craftyhunnypie
Wait until the last week, when you start whistling to the eggs to get them to wiggle ( like I do). Good luck both of you. Emma.x
phoot
Hi, Its day 7 and I have just candled my eggs. 1 egg is alive! we could clearly see a black blob moving around. The other 5 eggs were not as clear but the air pockets are visible. So I'm leaving them for a few more days to develop. Is it possible for the eggs to develop a different rates if they are from the same clutch?.
Goosey Lucy
Well I think things are going well... I candled the eggs on Day 10 and removed 3 clear Lakenvelder eggs leaving 21 to continue developing. I candled again yesterday Day 14 and as far as I can tell everything's still going ok I'm going in to school on Sunday to stop them turning and remove the separators. I'm hoping we can get a webcam set up so I can keep a check on what's going on from home but will be going in to school twice a day to keep an eye on everything. Starting to get really nervous now The children are so excited, I've never known them to be so quiet as they were when I candled an egg for them to see. They were amazed to see something wriggling around inside.
Clunie
Good Luck Goosey Lucy, i must admit that it is wonderful to show the little embryo's to the children. A coupe of years ago I took my incubator with 8 eggs I think, up to our little primary school for the children. I popped in every so often to do candling etc and showed the children . Luckily A few of the children managed to see at least one chicken hatch. They were so excited! I hope that the children can see the wonderful moment of hatching - in some ways the best moment of all! Goosey Lucy
Well I got up early and was in school by 9am this morning to turn the turning cradle off and to set the temperature and humidity levels to what they need to be. I really can't believe that by the end of the week we will have chicks for the first time.
Purplemaniacs
How exciting, I am sure the children will love it. We are planning to hatch some chicks after Easter at school. Chrissie
Goosey Lucy
Amazingly we had 5 chicks hatch overnight, the children have been very good about keeping the noise levels down for their visitors. 2 more hatched this morning. I've taken some photos which I will try to put on her some time today/tomorrow. They are all so excited and amazed about what has been happening. The rest of the staff have also been in for a look too. This has been a wonderful experience so far, the rest of the school will be coming in for a look tomorrow afternoon.
