best way to allow free ranging but as safe as poss from fox

Recommended Posts

hi all

im so excited! im moving to a farm at the end of May

my chickens are currently in a walk in run with a cube- obviously with 15 acres its only going to seem right to let them have more outdoor space and im not sure on the best way to do it? i was thinking elec poultry netting in a huge square connected to a mains unit (were also having elec fencing for the horses so can link it to the same circuit) with the cube inside for them to sleep- is this fox proof enough? ive lost once free ranging in my garden to foxes and it was horrible so want to keep them as safe as possible- any ideas?7

thanks all x

Not 100 % what fully to suggest however my mum keeps geese and after losing some and ending up with more ganders she had to get some females to create harmony. The farm she bought them from swears by electric fencing they have now put that up around the pond where they live.

It does seem to be something people suggest re fox proofing it is said that they dont like the electric current and can sense it ?? mind you male urine is meant to deter as well ??

good luck either way sounds like my dream xxx (minus the worry)

Apparently, llama's and alpacas are extrememly good fox deterrents! I bet you could squeeze a couple into those 15 acres :D

Otherwise, I think electric fencing is really the only reliable method against Mr fox

Ahh yes alpaca's are good.

The hen hotel we use also breed alpacas and they are very protective and will spot a fox and give chase immediately.

They have several big cockerels all out in a big field with their male alpacas and they get on great!

Plus the babies are cute!

hi thanks all!

i really feel like the luckiest person in the world :D its something ive always dreamed of but honestly never though would happen.

the electric netting sounds a good starting point then, my husband loves alpacas so seems a good excuse to look into them- my friend works on a alpaca farm so will get in touch with her- never knew they were good fox chasers

my chickens are going to think they have died and gone to heaven! cant wait to see them running round in the field
