christyrose12
Went to let the girls out this morning and my blue orpington wouldnt come out. So I picked her up and she wont open her eyes. They are just white - is that the eyelid? Occasionally she'll open them for a second and then close them again and just stands there. Any idea whats wrong with her? good_egg
Didn't want to read and run, but not really sure. I think when they feel ill they will puff up and shut eyes, sounds like maybe she isn't feeling good. Can you take her inside somewhere dark, quiet and comfy and give her water and something she loves to tempt her to eat. If she's not drinking you'll need to try and syringe a bit so she doesn't dehydrate. If you need to do this might be worth adding sugar or honey to give her a bit of a boost. Do you have nutri drops? Standard questions re worming - have you with Flubenvet and when, and poop, eating laying etc... Hopefully someone with more knowledge will be along soon! Good luck. christyrose12
I have some flubenvet 1% here which I havnt used yet. They were treated with ivermectin in December. That kills worms dosnt it? She dosnt seem to be eating. How do I give her the ivermectin if she wont eat. I just went out to see her a minute ago and she was pecking around and then she stopped and her eye lid came up again. She looks like a zombie. Its not her proper eyelid closing its something else?
Dolly
I'm no expert but standing with closed eyes does mean they're under the weather but could be for so many things. Have you checked if is there something in her eye? It could also be a soft egg on the way but if in doubt get her to a vet to be on the safe side. The Ivermectin is applied to their skin usually on the back of the neck, it's not given by mouth and I understand it treats lice not worms. Worms are prevented or treated with the Flubenvet that you have. I hope she gets better soon and someone with more advice and experience comes along for you
Egghead68
I would definitely bring her inside. Hopefully it's just a softie but if she doesn't pick up soon sounds like she will need to see a vet. Hope she gets better quickly.
mimi5
Oh dear Christyrose...they are a worry!!! I would bring her in and keep her warm. If you have nutri-drops definitely give her some and tempt her to eat, warm pellet porridge anything she likes (mealworms usually go down! ) Also if you have any tonic put some in her water. I think you can bathe her eye(s) in cold black tea if you think something has got in there. She sound under the weather to me.....I would take her to the vet tomorrow if she doesn't improve. Let's us know how you go.....I lost 2 recently in one night and still have a little one recovering from myco.....hoping she makes it
christyrose12
What is myco? She was fine yesterday. What does the black tea do? I've got some nutridrops. How do I worm her though - if she wont eat?
mimi5
Sorry What is myco? Mycoplasma is an infection, usually respiratory and can be carried and only surface once the chicken is stressed. Google it for info. What does the black tea do? I was advised to try this when my girls first had bubbly eyes, I believe it's soothing. You could try it? How do I worm her though - if she wont eat? It would be difficult, but you can make up a suspension from flubenvet & water I did this with my vets assistance (and instructions on how to mix up the right dilution!!) and syringed it into a poorly one. Really though if your vet is any good, best take her to be checked out, myco will need antibiotics. Also it's contagious, so separate her for now. Best wishes
christyrose12
Went to let them out today and she jumped out full of beans and back to normal!! So I dont know what was wrong with her yesterday.... Anyway I have started on the 7 day course of flubenvet this morning and she tucked into her food as though she was starving!! So I measured out 2kg of food and put one scoop of the powder in and mixed it all up. Is that right? It didnt seem very much.... Does it stick to the pellets? mollyripkim
You can add a drop of cod liver oil to help it stick. Glad your girl is better today.
christyrose12
I put a splash of olive oil (didnt have any cod liver oil) but it didnt seem to do anything. How much are you actually meant to put in? Are you meant to add enough so that its all sticky and oily? Does anyone just add the powder and mix it up with no oil? Sorry this is my first time using it and I am worried I'll get it wrong. Also I am worried about eating the eggs but it says theres no egg withdrawal with it - so they must be okay? good_egg
Glad to hear she's better, what a relief. I put oil in to mix with the powder, just enough to add a very slight sheen but not so oily or sticky - they have to last a week! I mix the powder with small amount of good first then add rest of food and some cod liver oil. As long as no powder in washing up bowl (what I mix in) then I figure its good. You can eat the eggs. christyrose12
Thankyou all. They have finished their weeks flubenvet treatment. I always worry that I am doing it right. I made up 2kg and that lasted 4 days. So I thought I wouldnt need another 2kg so only made up 1kg with half a scoop but ran out on day 6 so had to make up another 1kg with half a scoop. Abit hit and miss? Does it sound like its okay? I'll know next time that in a week they go through 4kg between the 6 of them. Does that sound about right? That means a 20kg bag of pellets lasts 5 weeks - thats if my maths is correct!!
suebee
Sounds about right to me, though maths isn't my strong point... I must admit, I've never used oil when mixing wormer powder with pellets. If you mix them thoroughly, in a large container, adding about half a kilo at a time, you'll see a slight difference in colour, between the powdered pellets and the untreated ones, which shows they're coated properly.
