walk in runs- alternatives to omlet??!!

Recommended Posts

dear fellow chook lovers

as with so many before me as a go (yellow eglu) /extended run novice i am slowly trying to persuade OH about the merits ( on my time! ) of a walk in run..,, especially if we want to expand our brood.

I do love the omlet walk in runs especially as i am a real fan  of the flared skirting around my go run - but the walk ins are so very very expensive i am looking to see if anyne might recommend any other type you could buy as "off the shelf" as the omlet , one that is easy ( ish) to assemble ( my husband and i dont do hammer and nails... ) that will be long lasting and of course keep out those horrid foxes...

any thoughts gratefully received

I've got a Harrod Horticultural fruit cage. My chickens are on our allotment just out the back of our garden, so we couldn't really put up anything more permanent. Also, it was the most economical way of providing them with a big run. We put weld mesh around the bottom, partly buried.

I have to say though, occasionally rats have chewed small holes through the cage mesh, but patch repair is very quick with a spare bit of mesh and a few zip ties.

I have to agree with Cheeky Chooky. It was photos of her Omlet WIR which inspired me to get mine in January and I haven't looked back (well, apart from the weeks it took to put it together - awful weather being the main culprit! ).We couldn't really afford it but we are definitely not DIYers so it seemed the best solution and I have not regretted it at all. If you can possible stretch to it, I'd recommend the Omlet WIR too :)
