Royal Mail price hike/ebay sellers beware

Recommended Posts

Knowing there are quite a few of us on here who occasionally sell on ebay I thought you should all be aware of this.

I have just found out about an alleged price hike regarding parcels and small packets, some will more than double in price. I cannot open the leaflet on the Royal Mail site, but, according to sources elsewhere, anything thicker than 8cm (with 45cm x 35cm as the other two measurements) will be medium parcel, and will cost considerably more to post. If you are selling on ebay, you may find any profit or gain from selling an item might be wiped out by new postage costs if you post on or after 2nd April, which is when the new prices come into force.

Personally, I have almost completely removed my and my family's need for any postal services from either the Post Office or Parcel Farce. Nor am I alone.

Mail delivery is now a dying industry, and price rises are just accelerating the demise by giving people and businesses an incentive to question their reliance on sending letters. At the same time, delivery of parcels is largely unaffected because of the healthy demand, and the even healthier competition between courier companies. Frankly, I'm content to sit back, watch the Royal Mail price itself into bankruptcy and cast occasional smug glances towards the Jacquie Lawson site that allows me to send limitless Christmas, Easter and birthday e-cards that are far more imaginative and fun than anything paper-based I've ever seen. I'd have more sympathy if the volume of useful stuff I receive through the letterbox ever came anywhere close to the junk mail, but at least I'm never short of fire-lighting or nest-box-lining material.....

As someone who had bought and sold a lot on E bay I will now only be checking the site every few weeks -the postage hike has, as far as I am concerned, made it unrealistic. Couriers are all very well but we bought a blackout blind last week on E bay and ended up waiting in all day for the courier who finally arrived at 4.35pm

I wonder what impact this will have on E bay? It certainly seems very complicated; surely parcels should be calculated on either weight or size, not a combination of both? When I went to the PO to get an updated leaflet I was given both a leaflet and a reasonably substantial booklet; how on earth much is THAT costing?

Yes, I spotted this before listing a few pairs of shoes, which would now cost a minimum of £5.20 postage, as due to the depth, they will fall into medium parcel size. The shoes will now go to the charity shop and I have already passed a pair on to a friend. One boxed and expensive pair will go on ebay but they will be the only ones!

I'm sure someone mentioned on the ebay forums that there was a maximum amount the postage could rise by, according to the postage watchdog, and this has been breached??

very naughty price hike

I really hope that this ridiculous price hike backfires and that Royal Mail looses business (I'm normally quite nice but this has me steaming! )

Our lovely counter clerk lady at the village PO is tearing her hair out - she says whoever came up with this system had obviously never worked behind a counter or sent a parcel!

Hopefully charity shops will do better now and there will be more bargains for us to ferret out! Win/win situation!
