araucanas or cream legbars?

Recommended Posts

I feel deprived of blue eggs, so I'm doing a bit of plotting...

I think that Cream Legbars look beautiful, but I'm not sure if I'd be better off getting some Araucanas instead, due to their smaller size.

My flock consists of bantams, with one Bluebelle that is getting on a bit and looks a bit odd towering above the rest.

What would people that have them recommend? Is one breed tamer than the other?

Hi, I have a lavender araucana. She is over 4yrs old, as tough as old boots, isn't at all noisy, but absolutely doesn't go in for cuddles. As a youngster she roosted in the trees!! She does lay the most beautiful blue eggs but over a short season ~ march to october or thereabouts. Would I have another? Def for the eggs but not if you want a docile cuddly hen. No doubt other peoples experiences will be completely different from mine. 8)

having kept both I would go with the Araucanas. Both breeds are a bit skittish but the Araucanas are a little more endearing and a nicer size too

CLB probably lay more eggs though but the Araucana eggs are unique in that they are blue right through the shell and are not white inside like blue eggs from other birds - a minor point but an interesting one

Blue all the way through is definitely a factor I have been considering!

Don't suppose you still keep Araucanas do you... ?

I've also had both and would recommend Araucanas; the regular sized Araucana is roughly the same size as a CLB, but the bantam version is smaller but still as hardy and a great layer. They can be mad old baggages with a slightly grating call (think rusty gate) but they are hardy and good, consistent layers. I have two at the moment one lays bright turquoise eggs and t'other slightly greenish ones, both are coloured all the way through.
