Luvachicken
Queenie sometimes has a pale comb. She looked pale this afternoon but was running about doing chickeny things and generally seems fine. When she had a pale comb once before I gave her a quick shot of the nutridrops because I was worried, but I didn't get a chance today. What is the significance of a pale comb ? mimi5
My pekins all seem to do this on and off. It can be a sign of broodiness. But I would say as long as it doesn't stay pale just keep an eye on her. Is she still laying?
Olly
A pale comb can mean several things - it can mean a hen is ill, or it can mean that she is moulting - or it can just mean she's a hen who normally has a paler comb than others. The best indicator of chicken health is behaviour, if they are running for treats, pecking, moving normally etc then I wouldn't worry. The Dogmother once said 'a healthy chicken is always busy' and that is my best guide - they may lie still in a dustbath, or perch quietly for a little while in between snacks, but if they are mostly active, alert and upright then there is probably not much wrong. sjp
it can also mean that they have just laid an egg or that they don't want any attention from a cockerel as the main idea of a bright red comb is that they are in prime breeding condition
Egghead68
A pale face and comb can also result from mites.
Luvachicken
Thanks everyone - those are useful tips She has been laying - I got 6 eggs again yesterday She is definitley running around doing chicken things.... and I haven't noticed any mites on her but I will have a look at her this afternoon. She has not yet been broody or shows any signs, unlike Suzie who has a go but forgets after she has been turfed off the eggs
