henny penny
Sory - I have lots of questions at the moment ! What size of eggs can you expect from bantams - does anyone have some photos showing them and any showing comparison of size for bantams and larger chicken eggs? atsw
Here you go. Two Bantam eggs from two of my Pekins and two 'normal' eggs (approx 60g) laid by my Sussex Star and Speckled Star. Andrew
henny penny
Oh not too bad a size then - any idea of weights - as I tend to weigh my eggs for cooking?
atsw
If I had to guess, I'd say around 40g-45g, I've not weighed one for a while. I find mine contain yokes that are quite close to the size of a normal egg, but contain much less 'white'. Andrew
mollyripkim
Hi, I have just weighed an egg from my little pekin and it was 41 grams. My silkies eggs range in size from 44 grams to 49 grams.
Daphne
Poland eggs hover around the 50g mark and bantam orp eggs are 58-60g ish
good_egg
Wow - I am impressed!! My full size wyandotte and CCL only lay around the 52-54g mark!! Perhaps I will get a few bantams in future - I kinda like their cuteness....
atsw
Yes, my great big Buff Orp only lays eggs that are around 55g and she towers above all my other hens. Very often the size of the chicken does not relate to size of eggs she produces. Andrew
Chicken deficient
Just been weighing eggs anyway for cake making! Apparently a standard supermarket medium egg weighs 53-63g My bantam Wyandottes are currently laying about 50g eggs My Pekins usually lay eggs that are about 40g. I use 3 Pekin eggs for every 2 eggs in a recipe, if that makes sense. However, someone has just laid a teeny tiny 30g egg - I think it must have been one of the two elderly girls that very rarely lay. I'll crack it open with caution, just in case, rather than straight into the cake mixture!
Chortle Chook
While we are talking about the size of bantam eggs, I found some really handy egg cups from Cottage Hens that fit a bantam egg perfectly and enable you to have boiled eggs. My banties' eggs are really scrummy boiled and have larger yolks in proportion to their size than normal eggs, but they would not stand upright in normal egg cups. I can't see the egg cups themselves on their website but if you were interested you would just need to email Tom at tom@cottage-hens.com Here they are with a Silkie egg on the left and a Poland egg on the right
