Ella died yesterday . She had had sour crop since Sunday morning, and went downhill very quickly. A kind hen-friend was with me, and she tried to empty Ella's crop but things had gone too far. Ella was a great grass eater and we think she had too much long grass. (Yes, I have been round the garden and taken away all the long bits.) She was a great hen. :)

Tomorrow C will collect two more hens, and we face the prospect of Adelaide settling in with two new-comers. I've read all the recent posts about introducing one or two newbies to an established company, but none about two new ones joining one resident hen. Ella was the leader of our twosome, but Adelaide would hold her own if Ella was too bossy. Our hen-friend has given us some tips, but does anyone have any experience?

 sorry to hear about Ella. I am always worried about long grass, but unless you have a very small garden it's hard to keep them away from it; don't blame yourself.

sorry, I can't help with this either, but someone on here will know.

Thank you for your kind words. Our hen-friend says we have been very unlucky to lose one of our first chickens so quickly, but we'll do all we can to make sure the garden is as safe as possible. We're amazed at how attached we have become to them in such a short time - here's hoping Adelaide is as friendly to her new chums as she is to us!
