advice re: coughing/sneezing hen

Recommended Posts

Hi, wondered if somebody could give me some advice. At the beginning of April I got two new POL pullets which I added to my existing flock of 4 ex-bats. I was told the two newbies were "fully vaccinated" and of course my ex-bats will have been too. Before getting the newbies I never had any problems whatsoever, however after about a week of getting them one of my ex-bats became very ill with some sort of respiratory problem (1/2 closed eye, coughing/sneezing, mouth gaping open, very lathargic, not laying etc). One of the other ex-bats had just started to cough/sneeze and go off lay/lathargic and one of the POL pullets started with a bit of a watery eye. My vet sent me some antibiotics to treat all 6 hens, but unfortunately the very ill hen died. The antibiotics finished a few weeks ago now and they've all perked up and I'm getting 2 or 3 eggs/day from the 3 remaining ex-bats. The POL's have yet to start laying. The reason I'm wanting some advice is that although the 2 newbies and 2 of my ex-bats appear to be healthy, the ex-bat that started to cough/sneeze prior to antibiotics is still coughing/sneezing occasionally, and "gurgles" when she drinks. Apart from that she appears healthy, is eating well, has a red upright cone and is laying again. She is getting a bit elderly for an ex-bat (she's about 3 1/2 to 4 years old). Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions? Do you think she needs more antibiotics? As I said apart from the odd cough/sneeze she seems happy and healthy. Also, does anybody know whether my hens will be "carriers" of whatever they've had? I'm not 100% sure but assume it's probably myco. I'm due to get some chick later in the year and I'm already stressing about it! I don't want a flcok of poorly chooks again. Thanks
