Saronne
I have just brought home a lovely young bantam Araucana cockerel for my two Araucana ladies. The boy is only 12 weeks old and is in a separate pen within the bigger walk-in run (mainly for HIS safety!) Anyway, all my other hens are taking a quiet interest in him - and he in them, except for the two Araucana ladies who have started fighting with each other - really viciously! These two girls were hatch-mates and grew up together. They've lived peacefully for 3 years. Why are they fighting now? Is it something to do with the change in dynamics? (I have never had a cockerel). It gets worse; one of the girls actually started crowing; It wasn't the cockerel boy - as I was out in the run watching. It was definitely one of the Araucana females. Please - all you chicken shrinks out there, what is going on and what should I do?!
Saronne
The lovely Lewis got in touch via Facebook. Sounds like female Araucana thought she was top chook and the introduction of a male sent her hormones 'all over the place' I've since isolated her for a day or two and she's now lower down the pecking order. Better still, she's stopped the ridiculous 'crowing'!
