Just been outside for a cup of coffee with my chooks. When I opened the egg-port the 'door frame' had half a dozen fat slugs lurking all around the rim :vom:

And there was another under the hooky bits of the grub.

Is this unavoidable in this damp weather? I have my raised beds for veg and salads all netted against the hens and the cat and was thinking of putting down the organic-type pellets inside the netting, although I don't think they're very effective. I also have a bottle of gel stuff that's supposed to act as a barrier. This is not going to keep them out of my eglu, though...

I did feed the culprits to the girlies, but they get to the point where they've had enough, and they wipe the slime off their beaks down my jeans

My girls look at me as if I'm mad if I present them with a slimy slug, they'll occasional eat the odd baby one and then wipe their beaks in disgust. Why would you eat slugs when there are lovely huchera plants to feast on? I saw Tasha trotting across the lawn to me yesterday as pleased as punch with a huchera leaf in her beak despite all the anti-chicken protection :wall: Luckily they haven't developed a taste for hosta yet :shameonu: They must be eating slug eggs though as despite this fussiness there are far fewer slugs in the garden even with all the wet weather.
