The Dogmother
I've had a dull ache above my top jaw, on one side of my face since Monday - nothing very painful but it's nagging a bit. By coincidence, I had a dental check-up on Tuesday and asked him to look at that side; he said it wasn't anything to do with my teeth but suggested it might be the sinuses as the ache changes when I alter position (lie down). I've had a sinus infection before and it's nowhere near as painful, and there's no (pardon the detail ) lime green snot either, I haven't had a cold recently and am not at all congested, so it's a mystery. I'm trying to avoid taking time off for a GP appointment, so wondered if you had any ideas. I might try steam inhaling this evening if I remember. lillybettybabs
It could be a tighten muscle in your neck that has an inserts around the jaw line, I have to have to get one of mine sorted now and again i suffer neck, jaw and cheek ache (with headaches) when i need it treating. The Dogmother
I wondered that too as I am tense around the neck - I might see if I can get an osteopath appointment.
Chickendoodle
I have suffered from sinus problems for years on one side (had an op to clear it a few years ago but I still get flare ups). I get pain but no discharge either - that is what causes the pain as the sinus isn't clearing. I cant take sudafed as it makes me feel awful but some people swear by it. Sometimes I can clear it by holding my head upside down for a minute, squeezing my nostrils shut while blowing and then standing upright. Also good to run the shower over your face on quite a high pressure, or use a hot flannel. Mine always goes after about 5 days without the need for antibiotics but I sympathise as it's rotton. I can cause mine to flare up if I get a bit dehydtared, so drink plenty of water. I suspect that plain chocolate affects me as well
The Dogmother
Thanks for that info chickendoodle, it isn't painful, just nagging - a bit like period pain. I will try your suggestion to drain it and do some steam inhaling tonight. If it doesn't shift then I'll book in for some cranial osteopathy as that always drains them. I am hoping to avoid antibiotics and I don't think it's infected.
Cinnamon
I suffer from sinus problems & a few years ago had symptoms just like this & I too went to the dentist who gave me the all clear. I was convinced it wasn't my sinus as there was no congestion or mucus coming out, but I went to the Doctor who gave me antibiotics & told me to steam inhale, & the problem went. You can get a really cheap steam inhaler from Boots which is worth its weight in gold. Its like a cup with 2 handles & a bit that fits over the nose & mouth - think its less than £5. I sympathise, as it can be very uncomfortable & does nag, like you say.
The Dogmother
I usually just fill a bowl with boiling water and some menthol & eucalyptus inhalant; I'll have a go this evening. I wonder if it's anything to do with the flight back from holiday - that was a week ago last Monday I don't eat or drink any dairy either before anyone asks. Cinnamon
I used the bowl method for many years, until someone recommended the inhaler, which is far easier & more concentrated. Best fiver I have ever spent

I used the bowl method for many years, until someone recommended the inhaler, which is far easier & more concentrated. Best fiver I have ever spent Really glad I stopped by, as I hadn't seen those inhalers before. They look like a really good idea... just bought one from Ebay. If it still aches then i will make an appointment with the osteopath to have some work done on my neck, shoulders and head.
chickencam
My OH and his dad both suffer with this from time to time, OH got relief for a few years when after having some dental work done he developed a drain in his gum, it would fill up a bit like a spot, disgusting I know but it didn't hurt and he would stick a sterile pin into it which would drain the fluid, it eventually stopped happening and he has gone back to getting the odd niggle from time to time. I think that the various spaces in the jaw and nasal area are so linked that it is hard to decide what is causing the problem, OH has seen several dentists about this over the years as gas his dad and they all say nothing to do with teeth, but thy have both had more than their fair share of abscesses and the problem often eases after dental work. Princess Leia
OH has suffered with sinus issues over the years - 6 lots of surgery over 15 years, generally 6-8 lots of antibiotics per year. Not to mention having both jaws moved forward 1/2 inch to cure obstructive sleep apnoea.. If it's a blocked sinus issue generally any decongestant with pseudo-ephidrine seemed to help. Lately, he's been using a Neti Pot to wash the sinuses out using lukewarm salt water, which has helped. He also used to get pain similar to sinusitis post-jaw surgery which was due to jaw clenching whilst asleep. For that, putting thumb inside cheek (forefinger outside) and pinching the cheek hard works to relieve the tension.
The Dogmother
I did some steam inhaling last night and it feels a lot better this morning; I will do it again tonight and see how it goes. Many thanks for all the suggestions and advice.
