Broody or Egg Bound?

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I am hoping for a bit of advice.

My Speckledy has not been laying for the last 3 days, but has been spending a lot of time in her usual nesting hollow. I shoo her out from time to time so that she can feed and drink, but when I go back she is there again. She fluffs all her feathers when she is out, and the other girls have a bit of a go at her.

We thought she might be egg bound, so last night we bathed her and vege oiled her vent as per Egluntyne advice. We couldn't feel an egg when handling her. Nothing has changed today, but when I have been watching her, she looks bright eyed and happy, and isn't bobbing her rear end up and down.

Could we have mis-diagnosed? Does this sound like egg bound or does it ring any other bells for anyone?

Thanks in advance for any enlightenment. We are a bit bamboozled!

Yes - she looks pretty none plus see. She is a pretty much daily layer, so the lack of eggs is obviously of concern. However, from what I have read it seems that if they are egg bound they look pretty rough. Do you know if that is the case?n

Thanks

I've never (touch wood!) had an egg bound hen, but my understanding is they look pretty ill and sorry for themselves.

A broody hen looks well, but very grumpy and welds themselves to the nesting box

My broody kind of flattens herself down more than they normally do when laying an egg
