You can connect an iPad to the Internet a couple of ways, either through WiFi which is free, or with a SIM card which you would have to pay for, and the amount you can connect and cost depends on your data bundle. You would obviously need a SIM card if you want to connect to the internet when no WiFi is available, like with a phone.

You can also download various apps, including games etc which can be used offline so no Internet connection is needed. You can also put music on there. I would imagine you can download films too, although I have not tried this myself.

Just as an aside, if your kiddies are going to use it, then make sure that you download a parental control app to prevent them happening across anything untoward

And make sure you set it so you always have to enter credit card details to buy anything, that way hopefully they shouldn't be able to accidentally buy games or credits for 'free' games.

If you want to use the iPad where no wifi is available you will need to get one with 3G capability which not all of them have.

There are loads of apps and games for little ones both fun and educational.

I would recommend getting a case for it that doubles as a stand because it would be heavy and slippery to hold for small hands. Also make sure if you are going to let the children use it unsupervised that you have all of the security settings at maximum, especially your apple ID and password, you will need to set this so that each time you download something or make changes to your account you need the password, they come with a default setting of 10 minutes after you enter the password you can download anything, this could be costly if they download paid games or game content.

Don't buy the case from a shop go to amazon or ebay where you can get a good one for £8-10.

I lovely iPad, it is great for watching on demand TV too.

There's a price difference, so it's worth thinking about where you'll use it - if it's going to be mostly at home/in an area where you know WiFi is available, it will be cheaper to buy the WiFi only version. There are lots of free WiFi spots around but it's frustrating if you want to use it and can't access any.

If you look at this thread you'll see my recommendation at the end for a GiffGaff SIM card, if you do decide to go down the 3G route.

Personally I'd go for a 32gb, some of the latest games are getting very big to download. A 16gb would be okay, but you may need to manage your space better and delete stuff you don't use.

Turning off in app purchases is the best thing you can do, plus set Require Password to 'Immediately'. Then no worrying about them buying anything, you can be in full control of the App Store.

Or you can use your smart phone to create a wifi hotspot and use that - that's what I do with my Android phone and tab.

You'd need to check that tethering is allowed with your mobile contract first, some providers frown on this now and try to block it (unfortunately). Some allow it without restrictions though.
