soapdragon
We are having a long overdue clearout and have lots of video cassettes. Charity shops won't take them - presumably because no one wants to buy them - but, as there is a fair amount of plastic in them, are they recyclable? I just cannot bring myself to put them in landfill
Ain't Nobody Here
Funny, I was just saying to OH we'll have to throw out all our videos. Our DVD/video player has just broken and it's unlikely we'll ever watch videos again. I've put all the kids ones in the attic rather than put them in landfill so would love to know the answer to your question too! Edited to add: Check this out. Looks like I can take them to my local recycling centre .
soapdragon
Thanks, ANH! I have found a link from the site and have e mailed to see if I can take them to our nearest dump...will let you know the response!
redbug
I saw somewhere the tape knitted into bags, mats etc.... Will see if I can find link.
Bramble
We have book banks around here (usually in local car parks etc), I'm not sure if they're operated by Salvation Army and/or Oxfam, but they still say on them that they accept videos as well as CDs, books etc - it might be that they haven't updated the signs on the boxes, but if it still says they accept them, maybe you could pop them in there? soapdragon
Have just heard back from local waste management company who advise me these are NOT recyclable and should, therefore, go in the black bin for LANDFILL
Snowy
Funny I should just read this, I've just spent the afternoon dragging a box of videos around the local charity shops trying to get rid of them! Such a shame as it is the full series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I just can't bring myself to dump them all
soapdragon
I have decided to put the lot on the local free pages - surely someone can use them? Equally, there seems a lot of plastic in the cassette itself
Snowy
Mine have been on Freecycle several times with no joy
Olly
I managed to give mine away (with the video player) but if I had any left, I'd have a go at this - I believe you could knit or weave with them as well.
chickencam
We use old video tape as bird sharers at the allotment, strung around canes, it shimmers and largely keeps the pigeons at bay. It does get thrown out at the end of the season though, because it perishes, and I worry about the chemicals in it.
