How many and will it work

Recommended Posts

Got 2 hens in a 12x6ft run, its a big run for 2 and also have a eglu, looking at getting some more but also want to look at bantams, do they mix well and how many chickens/bantems can you get in an eglu, I've had 4 good size chickens in the eglu before and I think that's as many as I'd like in at one moment, but how much room would bantams take up? Also do the lay well? And which breeds would people advise to choose and why. Thanks in advance

Have you got a classic or a go. The go is slightly bigger and will definitely fit 4 hens. As to mixing with bantams, I believe that you can mix them, and I have. My polish bantam loves the bigger girls I've even seen her snuggling under a wing. I don't know much about mixing breeds though, not expert enough. I just buy what I think looks nice and introduce them gently and gradually. :D

Bantams and large fowl don't always mix. It all depends on the breed. My ex-bats and aracaunas attack my Polish Bantams despite slow introductions etc so we now have two flocks. Polish bantams don't see well so are particularly vulnerable. They might get on with a docile breed like Orpingtons but I've chosen not to risk it. A feisty breed of bantam like a Pekin may well be OK. You'll need slow introductions and a contingency plan in case it doesn't work.

I bought 6 Pekin Bantam first then introduced 2 bluebells, 3 Arucana's, 2 sussex and 1 Maran and all get on very well. My little pekins are the bosses  !!

And from my lot i was getting 6 eggs a day this summer, and at the moment im getting 2. But will pick back up come spring x
