Plum
I've got a basic Olfa 45mm one for years don't feel the urge to get one with fancy handle but guess if you have arthritis then another choice may be better. If I was to get another I'd go by colour
keyhole kate
Thanks plum I will have a look at the make you have and bless you for remembering I have arthritis I can't realy knit or crochet anymore but I am still pretty good on a sewing machine and I thought patchwork quilts might be be good way to raise Some funds for a local charity mamas angels they provide memory boxes for parents of stillborn babies at our local hospital sadly my DD was a recipient of such a box and I want to help to do something to help raise funds for them
Plum
Great idea and you'll enjoy doing them. Are the memory boxes for photos, blanket the babies wrapped in, lock of hair type of thing? I'm so sorry your DD lost a baby, how heartbreaking.
redbug
I use a Olfa 45mm found it cheaper to buy off amazon. Sorry about your daughter very sad. You will get lots of tips and ideas off this tread, with all the wonderful and clever patch workers we have, they are so good.
keyhole kate
Thanks ladies I will hop over to amazon I had looked there but there were so many brands and sizes to choose from I thought I would ask on here as I know there are lots of experience patchworkers I don't know what I would do without the omlet forum. Ps Is there anything else that's an essential that I should buy while I am there ?
Olly
you will need a cutting mat to use the rotary cutter on, and a patchwork ruler - sorry I'm no expert, my sister bought mine for me, so I can't recommend brands/sizes etc. The cutting mat is something I already had for calligraphy, it's immensely useful for anything where you want to cut paper or card as well as material. Mrs Webmuppet
You will need a rotary cutter, cutting mat and a quilting ruler. I have used Creative Grids for this kind of thing -see the link thing. A 45 degree template is also useful for doing the binding. http://www.creativegrids.com/acatalog/Christmas_Special_Offers.html
keyhole kate
I finally have all the tools recommended plus a few more that slipped into my basket and lots and lots of fabric all I have to do now is find some time to make a start Between the girls, allotment and bee hive must haves my DH just shrugs his shoulders when he gets home from work to find another parcel in the hallway
Plum
That's ok you just have to admire your tools and stroke and sniff your fabric. Start just one project so you have a UFO or WIP and you're a quilter
Valkyrie
Only one WIP/UFO? You just wait and you'll have loads! I would recommend going on courses - I have a quilt that I started yonks ago - yeah, WIP, and I think I could entitle it 1001 ways how not to make a patchwork quilt! I still prefer doing mine by hand and although I went on a machine quilting course I've forgotten - there are great tutorials on You Tube too if you get stuck - including using your rotary cutter! With me it's an addiction to fabric. Always something pretty and irresistible! Just got my Alto Quiltcut device so looking forward to testing that out. But enjoy yourself and we'll look forward to the piccies!
