C&T
My daft chickens. Some months ago, we suddenly ended up with 1 chook, so bought 2 more. All was well with the world, and the Eglu was used for sleeping and laying. Hurrah! Then sadly, our eldest chook passed away, which left just our 2 new chooks. Who ever since have REFUSED to sleep in the Eglu. Wondering if the old chooks ghost is haunting it! They will go in to lay their eggs - but that's it! They instead sleep in their WIR on one of the top perches. Do you get Chicken exorcists??
Olly
Just worth checking - are you sure there's no redmite in there? It could just be that they prefer sleeping outside, two of mine do in all weathers.
C&T
Wondered the same thing - so took it all apart, jet washed it all, covered it in lice powder and red mite powder. Saw no signs of lice as I took it apart, although appreciate wouldn't necessarily see anything. Made no difference... Hence my conclusion it must be the ghost of old Fred... Patricia W
Red mite are different to lice. Like little walking pencil dots. Easy to miss them. But I have girls who prefer to perch outside in the WIR so may just be choice.

redsunset
If it makes you feel any better I have 4 chooks who sleep in the willows but will lay in one of the houses happily but insist on being outside at night?? They have only slept in the houses on a small handful of occasions, when I lifted them in the dark but went straight back to willows next night? Don't know when they will come down but am keeping an eye on the temps, and so far they are hale and hearty??
C&T
I've started lifting them in at night at the moment. Thought would try for a few nights and see if they get the message... If they do, great. If they don't... Well... I guess they are happy enough! Laying well and bright eye'd etc. Just keep an eye on them when very cold I guess! Or I get in the local vicar for an exorcism... Not sure what he would make of that!
Alis girls
Much the same as the fishing shop when I asked for a large net, they said "what sort of fish is it for?" I said "chicken" They were speechless
