dirty chicken needs a bath?

Recommended Posts

Hello, just looking for a bit of advice.... My amber girl is very dirty under her wings and at the top of them. My guess is that she's got in the dust bath (soil & wood ash) when damp from the rain. It is kind of stuck on so I don't think she'll be able to get it off herself so I'm wondering whether to give her a bath. I'm just worried that she will hate it and of course I'll need to dry her with a hairdryer so she doesn't get cold. She doesn't seem the least bit bothered by it so should I wait til spring when it's warmer or do it now?

Thank you in advance!

Agreed - bathing a mucky chicken isn't really necessary, the dirt won't bother her in the slightest! But if you really want to get her spick and span again then yes you can give her a bath. Making sure that she is completely dry before putting her back outside is essential this time of year as it's so chilly and a cold, damp chicken could be at risk of becoming ill. To be honest, if it were me I wouldn't bother as the likelihood of her getting mucky again quickly is pretty high!

Thank you so much, that is exactly what I wanted to hear! I'm not bothered about her grubby bits, I was just worried it might be 'unhealthy' in some way. I'll just leave her as she is I think and if it gets lots worse ill sort her out in the summer. As you say, she'd just get herself into a state again anyway!
