Anyone watching the BBC2 7pm Interior Design programme

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine has been recording the BBC2 Interior Design programme for me as it is on at 7pm - while I'm still working. I LURVE it! The design is done by amateurs rather than magazine celebs, and is on my kinda budget (they have to do a complete room for 1k). It is full of ideas I can use (like the ladder put horizontally on a wall as shelves - sounds odd but looked grand). Even my OH is happy to watch it and really liked the 'Tour de France' room :D

I've also become addicted after being determined not to like it because of the rather superior man doing the judging. However, I now rather like him as he has mellowed and it amuses me to see what he is wearing - I particularly liked the tweedy/cordy outfit he decided to wear on their rare jaunt to 'the country' Seriously though, I have a lot of respect for the amateur designers and their ideas, and when I can't get to sleep at night its because I am redesigning rooms in our house.....even though it doesn't even belong to us as we're renting :D

When I was watching this the other day (yesterday?),I found myself trying to work out whether I'd be more or less likely to take/listen to design advice from someone dressed as he does. In that episode he was wearing a mismatched orange ensemble. At least, I seem to remember that the trousers were orange and the top half wasn't

I quite like the male judge in his funny clothes, but am not so keen on the female judge who seems to me to have rather questionable taste. I'm watching the programmes on record so am not really up to date, but I've loved all so far except for the ones done on the Brighton Georgian houses. I thought all three made a bit of a mess of these and was so sad when that lovely blue got painted over. :( I can't help wondering if there is some sort of a contract that if it is a mess the BBC will pay to have it re-instated especially when the designers suggest doing things like distressing very nice antique furniture which I know is actually quite valuable  . I also can't help but notice that so far it is the male designer who has won each time. I'm not sure if this says something about male vs female creativity or if it is a bias from the judges

Did like the ' lock up your daughters' man who was living in the caravan

Settled down to watch it last night, only to be confronted by Jeremy Clarkson

I know what you mean about Caravan Man

We play 'pick the winner' each episode as well, although with less and less success recently! I've always liked the very first woman who won, and the young man who is a sales assistant - they both strike me as having loads of ideas, and I really like the people who make something for the room as opposed to painting virtually everything or concentrating on dressing the room. And if another designer suggests some variation on grey for the walls and anybody else mentions 'a pop of colour' I will probably scream

Forgot to say that nevertheless I am eagerly awaiting the next installment :D

Sorry, but I just don't get it. Seems to me that anyone who can hold a paintbrush the right way up can call themselves a designer these days. It came across to me like a recycled version of "Changing Rooms", with all the poor quality bodging and short-cut taking that went on in that. OK, there were a few inventive ideas, but you just know the owners were being polite and will probably change things as soon as the cameras stop rolling. And the amount of pretentious twaddle that the judges spouted nearly had OH throwing stuff at the telly. Just my tenpenneth...

I also guessed correctly :D I think Jordan will win, he is very creative and his rooms are all very different. Although I am personally less keen on what he produces I recognise he is extremely inventive and produces a real cohesive look to his rooms. Mind you I was very keen on the green dining room last night. I have long fancied some chinoiserie paper and it was useful to see it up in such a large quantity, I also liked the idea of using a very bright contrast to stop it all looking too 'period'.
