PoachedPlease
Hallo chicken lovers After a year of giving surplus eggs away I have just started selling them. I only have 5 hybrids but they are producing 4 to 5 eggs a day which is too much even for this cake lover. I can't believe how high the demand is though. I sold half a doz to a few colleagues and they came straight back demanding a doz each! Aaah my poor girls are suddenly in demand. I charge 1.50, but it's nit really a money making idea, just a practical one. Does anyone else have any thoughts on selling eggs. My only gripe is having to fork out for egg boxes Xx
Olly
I collect egg boxes from friends, and train my buyers to return them as well! Once people have tried home-grown eggs they always come back for more. I only have three laying hens at the moment, I sell a couple of boxes a week and it just about covers the cost of feed. Beantree
You just need to check out all the regulations PoachedPlease if you want to stay squeaky clean. You can't wash the eggs or store them in a refrigerator and I seem to remember you can't sell them in used egg boxes but the customer can supply their own box and fill it from your tray. You can't grade them into small, medium or large either, presumably because your scales are not calibrated to National Standards. There was an article in Practical Poultry about three years ago which was derived from either the DEFRA or Animal Health regulations. We used to grade ours and use old boxes (new ones were 6p each). £1.30 for medium and £1.60 for large per half dozen. Usually sold out every day, but not always so we had to hunt for customers. Olly
I think that might be over-complicating things to be honest. Like most people on here I've sold a few boxes a week to friends/neighbours for years, without any issues.
Chickabee
I'm going to put a big note on my boxes. RETURN TO SONYA. Fed up with buying the blinkin things
Ain't Nobody Here
I sell mine at work (often in used boxes) and also encourage them to return the boxes which they usually do. I wipe them if there's poo/mud on them - I don't mind it but I suspect my colleagues would!
